Braced at 23, am i making the right decision
I've been browsing this site for the past few weeks and have gotten so much information from here, so I decided to join. I have been wanting braces for years but just went forward with the process. I have an open bite in the front and none of my teeth really like up properly. So I had my consult and the official brace day is April 16. My ortho recommended GAC ceramic on the top and metal on the bottom. I have to also have all fore first premolars extracted. Few questions, is it okay to get the ceramics on the top on regards to prolonging treatment time from experience. My ortho said it wouldnt and if she cant get the results she want with the ceramic she will switch to metal brackets on top at no extra charge which she has only had to do with one case. Also about the extractions, I am assuming they are neccessary because my mouth is very crowded, I wanted to know from experience is it okay to get braced 8 days after the four extractions. Also my second molars are way out of line, my ortho said she dont know if they will get in perfect alignment but they will be better. Will post pictures.

Hi. I'm 25 and have a pretty complicated case. I have thought about braces for a long time as well and finally got them on about a month ago. I am very happy I finally did this. I already see visible results, especially on my bottom front teeth. If you want to see pics they're on my blog

hi trevi02,
i think you are defo doing the right thing, not to mention the gorgeous smile you will have at the end, i'm 6/7 weeks in and i am so glad i took the plunge my canines were high up like that one of yours, and there almost down in 6 weeks pretty good eh. lots of people get metal and ceramic and it works fine, and 8 days after extractions should be no problem, you'll just need to be a little sensitive with the brushing around the extraction sites.
anyway best of look,
sophie.

congrats on taking the step towards improving your teeth both in terms of aesthetics and functionality

As for being braced shortly after extraction I was braced the same day the last premolar were extracted. Apart from the pain and discomfort aspect I don't think that there are other reasons to wait a few days with the braces after extractions.
Treatment time is always an educated guess depending on a lot of factors e.g. how well you respond to treatment, your age, etc. Some are slow movers and some are fast movers.
By taking monthly pics you will keep track of your progress which is great for staying motivated. Sooner or later during your treatment the novelty of being in braces will wear off and then those pics will come in handy.
Good luck

Thank you all for your replies. Wow 6 weeks to move the canine is awesome. I am excited to have a better smile. I was just concerned about the ceramics as one of the dental hygienist at my regular doctor told me they slow done the progress as she have seen from experience but the ortho said it wouldnt. I guess I should listen to the ortho right??

I don't have ceramics, but from what I've heard and read here, it doesn't seem to me that they usually slow down the process, perhaps they used to but my impression is that today treatment times are quite similar and depend ultimately on your case rather than on the kind of brackets. And, anyway, I would definitely trust the ortho rather than the assistant!
yeah its pretty cool i never expected such quick movement. when i had my consultation the ortho said that ceramics take a couple months longer than traditional metal or damon brackets. but a couple of months isnt to bad i went with the damon braces because he assured me i'd get the best results with them. so just go with what you will feel best with

So today is April 8th and I had four extractions of my first pre molars done today. The bottom extractions kinda hurt as they were taking it out because he had to use a lot of fore to take them out. The top ones I didnt feel coming out at all. Now afterwards, not really in any pain. I took some motrin just to be sure. I feel a little pressure from the gauze pressing on the extraction sites but thats it. Maybe I am undermining the seriousness of it all but is it necessary to eat liquid/soft foods. I havent eaten anything afterwards as of yet so I am unsure of the harm.
On another note, brace day in 8 days, counting down. I'm still unsure as to what color ligs to get.
