anyone with a big overbite?

#1 Post by jcjc205 »

Hi,

I was looking at the 'braces stories' forum trying to find someone who has an overbite to see how it was being corrected, but I was unsuccessful in finding one.

I have a big overbite and was looking for someone who has a similar problem.

So if anyone wants to volunteer their 'braces story' link, please let me know.

Well people with 'big' overbites often have surgery to correct it. But then it all depends on what you mean by 'big'

By "Big Overbite" do you mean a condition where your upper teeth completely cover your lower teeth (deep overbite) or a condition where your lower jaw needs to move forward as well.

I'm presently being treated for deep bite with Invisalign. However, this was my ortho's preference due to a root problem on one of my front uppers. However, I may require regular braces for a while if this doesn't work.

One more comment where deep bites (vertical correction required) are involved. Final results are harder to maintain due to the pressure jaw muscles can put on teeth. If this is the case, you need to discuss how to maintain long term with your ortho.

Basically my bottom teeth are way behind my upper teeth. The bottoms hit the roof of my mouth and I can fit my index finger in between. But my molars fit at the right place

I was curious as to how others with a similar condition have gone about fixing the problem.

I was so excited to finally be able to affor braces (my insurance decided to cover orthodontics out of the blue) that I didn't ask my ortho how he was going to fix it, he just said that he will

Btw, no ortho has ever suggested that I have surgery, so maybe I have something else.

sounds similar to me jc ..... my lower teeth sit behind my upper ones and hit the palate ..... dont know how exactly to measure it whether its the horizontal or vertical measurement as both are applicable .. ie lower teeth need to come down and forward to meet where they should .

intitially my upper teeth were also inclined backwards so they needed to be brought straight vertically which of course has made the horizontal gap bigger

not a great pic but you get the idea maybe

quite frightening really  the camera angle is from below and still cant see my bottom teeth tucked way up there :?

I have had braces for 13 months now and will be having a bsso in june... then braces on bottom teeth too to get them into line.

I noticed your comment about insurance coverage and the fact others have noted jaw surgery. In my case, I wasn't recommended for surgery either. I'm also in for a retreatment as the deep overbite came back after previous correction.

To get surgical correction covered by insurance in the US, you'll probably need an ortho state this is the only way to address the problem.

If you go the non-surgical route, ask your ortho what type of long term retention and follow-up are needed. This is because adult treatment moves teeth and doesn't correct the jaw. Teeth have a tendency to go back where they came from. Be sure to have your regular dentist check your bite for changes after your treatment is over so any problems get caught early. Take pictures when you finish for future reference.

In the case of a relapse, it can happen very slowly. Mine occured over a period of 20 years during which I lost over 5 MM of vertical correction!!

If you get a good long term followup plan, you should have no problems.

I'm not exactly sure how they plan to fix it overall because I have not asked my stepmom.. but my little sister who is 8 just got braces.. she has a very deep overbite.. I can't even see how she eats properly. Anyway.. I'm 22 and just got braces this past July.. mostly for an impacted canine and just straightening.. but it's interesting to share the experience with my little sister. She has been soo excited to get braces.

Back to her overbite.. since she's so young she still has a long way to go and her mouth will still continue to grow.. I'm not sure if she'll need surgery, but she currently has to wear headgear any time she's at home. 24/7 unless she's at school or anywhere public.. just all the time at home. I feel bad for her because of that.. but she's so excited to have straight teeth and stuff.

Anyway.. I'm not sure how old you are.. but she's 8 and so far she's wearing headgear and braces to fix her overbite.

Tazzle,

I have the same problem. Although my lowers do not touch my palate, they all fall in, and look horrible. My lower arch v narrow.. looks odd.

Wanted braces to fix aesthetics, and TMJ symptoms. My lower jaw sits too far back. Last Ortho I saw, informed me I HAD GUM RECESSION, AND he WOULD NOT touch them. So back to the drawing board.
