Correcting an overbite without surgery or pulling teeth?

#1 Post by HkyGrl s2k »

How are YOU doing it? What are your stories?

I haven't been on in a while, and i need to update my braces story. But a lot of movement happened in my mouth and it looks like my ortho wants to work on my overbite next. He said it looks like i have 7-8 mm of overbite right now.

I have a 'consultation' appointment in May to discuss my options but he mentioned pulling two upper teeth, lower jaw surgery to move it forward, or how happy i am with the way it looks now.

He said he didnt really want to pull teeth because it would flatten my face a bit, i cant get surgery just because i cant afford it, and i was wondering what other people have had done to correct overbite without pulling teeth or surgery.

I wont mind if its fixed 100 % but i would like it to be a bit better than it is now. What do you think my options would be?

Thanks in advance for your stories and opinions! :) Pics below

It looks like you mostly have an overjet, and not so much of an overbite. Braces can usually fix an overbite. so I think your questions are really more about your overjet.

I have had mostly an overbite and a slight overjet (a few mm). One thing my ortho mentioned was shaving (IPR) between my top 2 front teeth (central incisors) to make them narrower. This would allow the top teeth to come back further, and reduce the overjet. I haven't decided if i want this done. The main reason to have that done in my case is a cosmetic issue: my top front teeth are much wider at bottom than top so there is a space between them even when they are touching at bottom.

Another option could be flaring the lower teeth forward.

How is your bite in front functionally? Can you touch your top and bottom teeth together without strain to bite into a sandwich, for example?

I am having my overjet reduced with class II elastics. It's a pain, and literally a pain, but it seems to be working :)

I had a similar situation in where my gap was about 8 mm. I did opt for the surgery, about 4 weeks ago, where they moved my lower jaw forward and I will say the results are beautiful! Just wanted to let you know in case you ever consider this option.

I also started treatment with an 8mm overjet. Surgery wasn't an option for me because my insurance won't pay for any part of it. One consult wanted to pull two top pre-molars and one bottom incisor but I really wanted to keep all my teeth. The orthodontist I decided on has greatly reduced my overjet with elastics and with flaring my lower teeth slightly. I needed space on the lower arch to straighten the teeth anyway, so she used springs to push the teeth out. I probably have a 2-3mm overjet currently and I couldn't be happier with the results.

I haven't been braced (at least, not yet) but I went to a third consultation and the ortho told me that I can keep all of my teeth however I will have a definite overbite which would have to be corrected with lower jaw surgery. I could have two extractions (top arch only) but the ortho was very concerned that my facial features would be affected negatively especially since I already have a mildly retrusive jaw. I haven't made a decision on what I'm going to do yet, but being told that your facial features will change and not for the better is, to be quite honest, scary. I want straight teeth but I want to keep my facial features intact, as well. If I were you, I would consult a surgeon and see what he/she says. I'm really leaning towards keeping all of my teeth and then getting jaw surgery. It's very difficult to decide what to do, though, because the two other orthos I consulted never mentioned jaw surgery; they both wanted to extract two teeth on top.
Age 23. Midline off by 5mm, lots of crowding, and a tooth on top of a tooth.

My situation

#8 Post by pagladeshi »

I'm a 26 year old male. I have recently seen a damon brace ortho, and he said one of the option is to extract 2 upper first premolar (teeth right behind the canine). I have roughly 4 mm overjet that flares or protrudes outward, and im guessing 80% overbite. I'm wondering if any adults has had experience with getting a similar situation corrected without extraction. I guess i have moderate crowding which is why he wants to extract 2 teeth. My main goal is to reduce the flaring of my front to top teeth, and angle them back a bit. I would be perfectly happy with that.
