Well went to the ortho this afternoon and sat in the chair. He put my uppers on and put 4 spacers on the bottom.

I have to say, I thought it would not hurt at all but it did hurt some. I guess my teeth are sensitive because it hurt a little when he cleaned them (although it did not hurt at the dentist a month ago). Those lip things were also VERY uncomfortable because he would move them or something and something would press into my jaw and let me tell you it HURT.

Oh my, and the spacers! Well he said my teeth were REALLY close together. He was really trying to get those things in, I mean he hands were shaking and it took what seemed like forever. Because he had to floss them in with such force, it made my gums bleed. I thought I was going to cry, I think those things were the very worst part of the entire thing, and now they are sticking out of my teeth and I am so afraid to have them fall out. He said if they come out they are going to have a hard time getting the bands on and I can’t image the pain of that if these things hurt so bad to get in.

I feel weird. I look weird. I can’t get my lips over these things and I am hungry. On the up side my husband seems to be attracted to me even with these things on. I go back in 3 weeks to get the bottoms on, he wanted to see me next week but they are booked. How are these spacers going to stay in for three weeks????

Will post pics later

oh, man it does feel weird when you first get them on... but even if you don't believe us, in a few days you'll be used to them, your lips will cover them with no effort and you'll start eating normally again. That's how it works! Good luck, and I wish you a smooth journey!

once those spacers are on for a week the bands will get on good. On my first night with spacers I had one slide out but I was able to floss it back in. Im getting my bottom spacers in a few months. got my braces 4 weeks ago...and my teeth on the bottom are in for a wake up!!!!

All that excitement with the countdown and then " *sigh*"???

Believe me I know how you feel but unfortunately for me I never had your positive attitude prior to getting braced. Everything you're feeling right now is 100% completely normal and it will go away in about two weeks and you will literally forget what it felt like. Go back to being excited. You finally started the long journey you've been dying to start! The only way to get through the braces journey quickly and easily is to have a good attitude and you seem like a really positive person.

Keep hydrated, use that lip balm and try to eat through the pain that will make the pain go away faster. GOOD LUCK AND CONGRATS! :-)o :jump:

about the spacers falling out - my ortho told me that if they fall out that means that enough space must have been made. (because it seemed that I kept on picking at them since they DROVE ME CRAZY)

But I thought spacers were the WORST part of everything I have gone through in the past 3 weeks. My teeth first just felt sore and the next day OY! I wanted to cry - so much pressure on the teeth that my head was pounding and well I had to chew with my front teeth :)

but its ok - after 2 days I was fine (except still couldnt chew)

and the best part was when I went to get my braces and the ortho took the spacers out for that 1 minute while they were out I FELT SO MUCH BETTER!

I've been braced for almost 2 weeks - and well I wish I could say I can eat normal :( but I cant - its a lot better than it was but its hard to even eat a cut up tomato (my front teeth are super sore and I can only chew with my right back teeth.

so I am hoping that maybe in another week or so I'll be eating normally :)

Dont be so down!! :)

because with me having these for almost 2 weeks now I really dont notice them that much anymore just notice when I attempt to eat :)

oh and also, when I got my spacers the suckers didnt want to go in either and my gums bled too....

so since its so tight around that area the possibility of them falling out is slim.

Thank you all for the replies.

I have to say I already feel alot better (with 400mg motrin, lol). The spaces bother me some, I feel like I want to just pick them out, and I feel ALOT of pressure on my teeth but I can chew on my back teeth fine. My front teeth however are another story. I hope things dont get worse, but if it stays like this its not toooooo bad. I am glad they only do the top first to let you get used to having them because I am sure this would be alot worse if I had both bottoms and top on.

I just realized the ortho forgot to put on one elastic ligature on my front tooth. I got silver so maybe he did not realize.

The pamphlet they gave me does not have this under "emergency Appointments"
but it does not talk about missing ligature either.

I have not called because they are 45 mins away and I really dont want to go back till the next appointment but now I am thinking maybe my teeth will not move with that one missing??????

It may well be intentional. Sometimes in the beginning when teeth are crowded they leave one or more teeth not connected to the archwire. Your other teeth will move and once there's more room that tooth will be added in.

But you should call them and ask. If it were an error, it could slow down your treatment if you wait until next appt to get it fixed.

I think I may call because my teeth are not crowded. I actually have a really large gap in the front (about 5mm). Some teeth in the back are really close but they dont overlap however, so I think he probably just forgot.

I will call tomorrow and hope its ok till I seee him in 3 weeks. I really dont want to drive back up there just for that.

Good luck with the spacers. I just got mine taken out today, got banded and braced. So just as I was finding relief after a week of spacers I'm at it all over again. Between getting teeth pulled and spacers I feel like I've been living on pain killers!

Congrats on getting braced! I agree that the spacers are the WORST! I had them before getting braced and now I have them AGAIN 3 months in so they can put bands on my back molars. Thank god for mashed potatoes! Looking forward to seeing some progress pics. Make sure to take some asap even if you think they look terrible. You'll appreciate the before pics later.
