Numb lips????

#1 Post by miss25 »

On my top lip I have these tiny row of bumps on the inside of my lips where it touches the braces. My lips feel sort of numb and funny, they do not hurt though.

I have an appointment in about 1 week and will let the ortho know, but this has been going on a few days after getting these and it has gotten a little worse.

Is this normal? I have no ulcers or sores in my mouth, just the line of bumbs where the braces touch my lips and the numb feeling.

I do have a reaction to anything less than 14 karat gold for whatever reason. My mom realized this when i was very young as my ears would swell; I never though to look into the fact that there may be other metals in the gold that i was allergic to and not the gold itself *sigh*, I dont know.....

I have three guess:

1 - the bumps are a result of the brackets being pressed against the inside of your mouth. It's often said that staying hydrated is a good way of getting comfy with braces.
2 - Maybe the bumps are due to friction. (See hydration comment above.)
3 - Perhaps you have a legitimate allergy, and your initial guess is right? Ask your ortho and let us know what s/he says.

Good luck!

Hmm yea I'm not sure. I definitely have a row of bumps on the inside of my lip and cheeks where my braces indent themselves into the flesh. It doesn't really hurt and no ulcers, but it's also not numb... I've had them for over a year so I am pretty used to it now. Not really sure what the numbness is from but I don't think it's very typical to get numbness. I would definitely ask about it. Hope you figure out what's causing it soon! Good luck :)

Hmm, maybe you're allergic to your archwire? The standard NiTi wires contain nickel, which apparently is one of the most common culprits in a metal allergy reaction. There's more info at these sites:

You should definitely bring it up with your ortho. If he thinks it's an allergy, maybe he could switch you to an archwire made with a different material and see if that helps.

I've gotten a little patch of bumps on my inner lip (where the bracket of one of my upper canines hits it) before, but it didn't cause much pain and went away fairly quickly. I'm allergic to metal as well, so after looking into this I wonder if that's what those bumps were from! Hmm.....

Good luck!
