How much does a second opinion cost?

#1 Post by nomorecrowd »

I am supposed to get my braces off soon but my midlines do not match and my ortho says that its because my face is assymetric. How much would it cost to have another ortho look at it? What is the risk in me trying to do it myself with elastics. I found a video and I am very tempted.

Under no circumstances should you perform self-orthodontics. It's not a good idea, you can really mess things up in a bad, bad way.

As for seeing another ortho, I'm not sure what that would cost. You can easily call around for prices. You could save some cash by getting a copy of your records from your current ortho--specifically your most current x-ray. I'm guessing that to really do a good evaluation any new ortho you see would want to do a records appointment which could be anywhere from 50-300 depending on the area and practice.

ME TOO! I really want a second opinion because I have been in the same offset wire (lots of bends) for 6 months and my teeth look pretty good but up close you can see there is still work to do. My teeth don't look symmetrical either and my bite is off and my ortho wants to deband in 2 weeks!

I have already spent a boatload of money but I am willing to pay a bit extra to another ortho if it means being satisfied and happy.

If you find out anything, please post again I would be curious to see what my options are too.

Thanks!

OK so I called 4 orthos.

1 told me they wouldnt do it, second one told me $200, then the 2 others ones told me it was fress because it's a consult. I told them both twice that i already have them and that they are almost about to come off and they still said it's free...do they know what they are talking about? I wouldnt want to go there and then get charged?!?!?!?!

I'm guessing that they are offering a free consult because they are hoping they can woo you away from your other ortho, THEN get your money and start treatment on you. Kind of like how you see free A/C checks advertised at a lot of garages. :)

I think it's good to get a second opinion, just trust your gut with those other orthos to make sure they're not just after your money.

I don't think you will go there and then get charged. I have heard that initial consults can be free. I was not so lucky, but it does happen apparently with great frequency based on what I have read on this board. My guess is that the free appointments will be very. very quick perhaps only a few minutes with the doctor. He'll simply look in your mouth have you open and close a few times and will say one of two things:
1. I can help you with your issue but you will need to do a full records appointment before I can tell you exactly how I will help you and it will cost XXX dollars.
2. Everything looks great and I cannot help you further.

I oh so know what your dealing with. Ive been in braces for what seems like forever. And my ortho wants me out of them but my lowers are not aligned properly. Ortho wants to just even them out after braces come off, but I still think it will look a bit odd.

I would get a second opinion. You don't want to be like me. I don't know how old you are, but I'm 24 years old and have a crossbite that wasn't fixed when I had braces for the first time at age 13. You don't want to end up with TMJ(or any other problems) in the future because of your bite and alignment(or misalignment, I should say).
