Molar bands - pain?

#1 Post by bracesat30 »

I got my molar bands put on yesterday; not very much fun with that one. I didn't expect the hooks to be as big as they are on them! My cheeks are in shreds back there.

Is it normal to feel pain in the tooth next to the molar banded one? (towards the front) I'm assuming this might mean some movement perhaps, as it's a new toothache feeling in there, and started this afternoon out of nowhere. It came after I sneezed, and I think I clenched my teeth together when that happened, which I'm sure didn't help!

Hoping it goes away soon, but welcome any insight on this to this newbie!

And I thought it was just me! I just my uppers..well four...the 3rd and my molars band aggravating me! You're right..those hook seem huge!! I'm getting used to them but since I have a left crossbite..when I bit all the way down my bottom molar hits the hook on the left side and my right side don't even touch anymore!

The hooks on my molar bands are very flat against the teeth, so flat in fact that it is sometimes difficult to get particles of food out. I'm gonna get a waterpik, but anyways maybe your ortho can flatten them a bit?

I want these bands off...sometimes I think I'm not going to be able to do this for 2 years! Something happened because I can't floss between my last molar and the one before it with the molar band. I have tried to force it and it feels like I'm pushing the band into my skull! :soremouth: I hope it will create some space once I get my extractions.

Mine hurt at first too! Yours may hurt more depending on how long you were in spacers. I was in them for... a long time. Like, 3 weeks total XD Owch! So my molar band pain wasn't too bad. It kind of felt like cold nerve pain to me.

Probably the worst part for me was getting the molar bands fitted. My back teeth are kind of embedded into my gum so the hooks are against my gumline. I don't know how they managed to get it on there either! Took about 2 weeks for my mouth to get used to it. (Tomorrow being the official 2 weeks) It's still sore but bearable and I managed to kinda chew on it today.

It will be 3 weeks tomorrow and I have pretty much gotten used to the bands. I can now floss between my last molar and that band when 2 weeks ago I couldn't. I really hope that when I get the bottoms put on I don't have to go thru this again with the bottoms

Getting the molar bands on was uncomfortable for me. It took them MANY tries to get one to fit just right on one of my molars, and when they got the right size I was biting down on part of it. So they had to shave it down. While I don't have much pain from them, I have a lot of trouble flossing with the molar band on, I've shredded the floss a few times.

I felt the same way the first few weeks I had the molar bands on, but i promise it goes away. It feels so weird at first. I've had molar bands and braces on for 8 months now, and I don't notice them at all. You will get used to it. just give it some time! :D

I totally agree with the other posters ... those hooks feel huge, but your cheeks will 'harden up' and adjust to them.

I had huge mouth sores back there for a while after I first had my braces put on. And the annoyance at getting food stuck around them can drive you to distraction!

The dental wax can be a pain to put on (*apply to a dry surface* ... yeah, right!!) but it does make eating/sleeping a whole lot easier. Hang in there! :)
