Has anyome here ever had an allergic reaction to their latex elastics & if so what were the symptoms you experienced? I have been wearing my elastics fot 2 days now & yesterday I felt like I was having a panic attack. I had shortness of breath, felt like I couldnt swallow my heart was racing but their was absolutly nothing wrong with me to bring this on, I was just watching t.v & bam I felt panic. I took the elastics off last night before I went to bed b/c I was having trouble swallowing & they cause alot of jaw pain. I woke up this morning & felt fine. Now as the day is progressing & my elastics are on again Im having that hard to swallow feeling again so I thought maybe Im allergic to latex or could the fact that my jaw is recalculating itself b/c of the elastics maybe my neck & throat muscles are spasaming. Any thoughts?

If you want to rule out the latex as the issue you could call your ortho's office and see if they have a bag of non-latex elastics that they can give you. I know that a lot of people have mentioned on here jaw pain when first starting elastics but i don't remember reading anything about difficulty swallowing. I hope it gets better for you

I would go by the orthodontist office to get their opinion or at least call them. The last time I wore elastics the sides of my cheeks swelled a little because the rubberbands dug into them so badly. It was so painful that I called them to ask about allergies to the rubberbands. Hope you get this resolved soon!

If you think that the elastics (or latex) may be causing you difficulty in swallowing, DO NOT WEAR THEM. If you do have an allergy, it could rapidly get worse for no reason and could cause anaphalaxis. Don't fool around with a possible allergy like this if you think it's causing your throat to swell.

Please call your orthodontist and get some non-latex elastics.
