Question about wisdom teeth

Hi,

First of all I don't have wisdom teeth yet, but I KNOW there's absolutely no room in my mouth for them.

I've so far had braces for a little over 8 months to fix an overbite and a few crooked teeth. I am worried that if my wisdom teeth come in a few years after getting braces off, they might push or otherwise affect my other teeth... leaving me with no choice but to get braces again. I know this has happened to a few people and I really really don't want to get braces again!

Question is, is it possible to get wisdom teeth removed as soon as u know they're coming in?

And also, a friend said it takes about 2 weeks to recover from getting wisdom teeth removed!!! is this true????

I don't know how old you are, but if you are at least into your late teens, your wisdom teeth should show up in your panoramic x-ray that your ortho took at your records appointment. Usually they are sitting under the gum and you can see if they are impacted or not. You may want to bring it up at your next appointment.

As for removal--recovery time depends. If your teeth are impacted in the bone, recovery can take longer because there is more trauma to remove the teeth, thus more swelling, and sometimes more pain. If it's a non-bony impaction or a run of the mill extraction, then the trauma is less severe and recovery time shorter. I had one bony impaction and two non, and if memory serves, the bony impaction site hurt worse and longer then the other two. But that's just me. Everybody is different. Honestly I found having 4 bicuspids removed to be worse then having my wisdom teeth removed. Wisdoms are all the way in the back so it's easy to "baby" those extraction sites.

Here is a good site that explains the types of impactions http://www.animated-teeth.com/wisdom_te ... _tooth.htm

My wisdom teeth have been static for the past few years. I'm 24, almost 25. I'm waiting until braces are over to have my wisdom teeth extracted. I had to have extractions for all four of my premolars; four extractions a year is enough for me!!

My ortho told me, they will only come through if there is room, if they do come through there is a chance they will make the teeth a little crooked he said teeth arnt always going to be perfect.

I started my treatment 9 months ago and about 2 months both top widsoms have came through no problem, you can have them taken out but so far nothing has left my mouth during the brace saga.

Thanks for your replies guys.

TumbleDryLow, I am 21.. my dad said he got his wisdom teeth when he was 27. Since I had the same problem with my canines as he did when he was younger, I guess I'd get wisdom teeth around 27??? I don't have room though.
I will ask my ortho I guess. 28 days till next appointment!

By 21 your wisdom teeth should be formed and sitting in your jaw. Although present, they won't erupt until they are good and ready. They don't need to be visible above the gum in order to have them removed. I know several people who had their wisdoms removed before they had the chance to come thru and move their other teeth out of alignment.
