I had to have a bracket repositioned at my adjustment on Monday and it was completely painless. Just sort of a strange feeling as he grabbed it with some differently shaped pliers and then snapped it right off. It didn't hurt though. Then he used the thingy on the drill end to sand off a bit of glue before putting on the new bracket. And they gave me a thinner wire for the next 2 1/2 weeks until that tooth straightens up a bit more :-( The repositioning wasn't bad at all though.....what makes me nervous is wondering about how easily the molar bands will come off

The thing they use to "sand" off the glue is made of rubber so it is pretty harmless. It smells bad and you end up with a lot of bits of rubber dust to rinse/brush away after.

It worries me too, and I've not been braced that long either! I guess we just have to trust that the orthos know what they are doing!

I did read (in a peer-reviewed orthodontic journal, so credible source) that ceramic brackets are more difficult to remove than metal ones :?

I just got my braces off this past week (yay!) and they sort of clip each bracket off with pliers. It didn't hurt one bit and it probably took about 30 seconds to do both top and bottom. After that, they sanded off the glue. This part gave me some pain, actually, but I think my teeth are just sensitive. It sort of felt like when you drink something really cold and it makes your teeth hurt. After that, they they polished my teeth up which didn't hurt at all and oh man, did my teeth look *nice* afterwards.
They also took impressions for my retainer and voila! That was that. No more braces. :)
And really, I don't think you have to worry about your enamel being damaged. Teeth are pretty tough. ;)

Thanks!! :D
I'm still at the point where I forget I don't have braces anymore and I'll eat something and wait for food particles to get stuck, but... nope! Ha ha.
Now that it's over and done with, it seems like the whole treatment process went by really fast.

I had quite a few brackets and one molar band removed for repositioning about 2 months ago. I have top ceramics and lower metal.
No difference between metal and ceramic. No issues with molar band. Removal was not bad at all. Sanding the glue off was the bad part--quite painful on a few of the teeth.

The worst part of sanding the glue off is the burning smell but it goes away quickly. The benefits of straight teeth greatly outweigh any discomfort from removing the brackets.
