#1 Post by gracey82 »

Just wondering for ppl who is wearing expander, does it affect your speech alot? Can you talk normally ???

My orthon has drop using expander on me because i was very concern bout affecting my speech and plan to use elastic instead.

But the moment now, I have feel my arch has become narrower befroe wearing braces and gummier. Im hoping its temporary. Else I think would be better idea to have expander?

I had two expanders (top and bottom), which were cemented in for 6 months. The top one didn't affect my speech. The bottom one did but it was pretty much back to normal after about 2 weeks (the first day was the worst). i think it depends on what kind of expander you get. I hated the 2 weeks of awkward speech. I had to practice speaking out loud but it got better. Now my arches look much better so I'm happy with the results.

I had an upper expander. It did interfere with my speaking, but only until I got used to it (about a week or two)...no big deal.

People tend to adapt to the expanders after a few weeks, however because of the restriction of your tongue, some sounds may elude you until you are expander-free. For instance I simply could not say k, q, or s sounds properly the whole time I had to wear my expander.
