Orthodontist Decision Making Time!

#1 Post by ZoseyPosey »

I had no idea that the first step of just PICKING an ortho would be such a tough decision to make. I've been on three consults and have narrowed down to two...

1) Traditional braces. Extractions: Either 4 premolars or 1 bottom central incisor (?), but must take records first to determine. 2 years in braces. 10 minutes from where I live, cost is roughly $5500. Not an ABO Diplomate (how much does this really count for??)

2) Damon braces. Extractions: NONE. 2 years in braces. 1 hour from where I live in ideal conditions, add more time for any amount of traffic. Cost is roughly 6900. Seems to have every orthodontic board certification known to man and travels everywhere to teach Damon's.

I'm not trying to start off a debate on whether traditional or Damon's are the better braces... I'm more interested in hearing from people who might have been in a similar situation in choosing between extraction/non-extraction and how they decided.

Thanks guys!

I went on 5 consults before narrowing my choice down to two. One recommended extractions - 2 upper premolars and one bottom incisor. The other said I wouldn't need extractions. I opted not to go for extractions because I have very healthy teeth and just didn't want to lose any. I couldn't be happier with my decision. My teeth look incredible and I'm getting the braces off in less than six months (my original term was 18-24 months). I think the ABO is an important factor for what it's worth - their doctors have to undergo a test to be admitted and have to do continuing education to remain in the ABO. Good luck with your decision!

Thanks Socksy! I think I pretty much have decided that the no-extraction is the better decision for me. Now I just have to get over my mental block with forking over that much money.

(Btw, the puppy in your icon pic is adorable!)
