Trouble eating swallowing
I am finding that I am having trouble chewing and swallowing because of the bands on my molars. My tongue is rubbing on the metal band on in the inside of my tooth. I am afraid that i am going to cut my tongue. So now I am just drinking my meals!!
I had the same problem at first and I definitely cut my tongue a few times (I could taste blood). I even tried gobbing on wax on the inside part of the band and that helped some but it didn't stay in place very well. Eventually, my tongue quit rubbing against the edges of the bands. It's fine now. So, hang in there!

Molar bands usually have cleats on the inside wall that do a very good job of making your tongue miserable. Ask your ortho to put ligs around them. That helped a bit for me. Over time your tongue develops "callouses" (for lack of a better word) and they won't bother you at all. I still feel mine and they are still sharp, but my tongue no longer cares.

I got my braces on two days ago and am experiencing the same problems. The cleats on the bottom molar bands are definitely wearing on my tongue. The top molar bands that have the piece that secures the end of the wire are really digging in to my cheeks. I've been putting wax on the places and it helps. I'm afraid that I'll run out of wax before my next ortodontist appointment. I'm also having a little trouble having the wax harden and stay in place. Any suggestions?
I found that the free dental wax I was given is truly wax... in a normally warm mouth, it WILL run and get swallowed. I bought silicone wax and it stays in place a lot better. A bit more of a hassle getting it on (dry and stuck properly) but definitely 'bouncier' on my tongue and doesn't run.KYoverbite wrote: I'm also having a little trouble having the wax harden and stay in place. problem eating:(
I too have considered this my diet plan...I had my top braces put on 15June and the bottom braces 12Aug with a bite plate ! I had a really hard time getting used to the bite plate, first day I kept gagging. \it is much better now, however I have a hard time eating anything, talking is another struggle...so tired of soup! Originally told I would have the bite plate for 2mths but turns out it will be at least 3mths I keep telling myself it is all going to be worth it in the end when I have straight teeth it makes it easier reading I am not alone!

Just wanted to post my thread about when I first got molar bands and what helped me (as I asked my ortho to do what was suggested below and she did and I've been fine ever since)! Good luck!
Thank you!! I am GOING TO!!! This is what's hurting me the most right now. The wax will NOT stay on that part...especially on the right side, for some reason. I don't know why they didn't just freakin' flatten it to begin with?!!

So, finally I had it one day and at the adjustment I asked about them...they are called cleats. My ortho said since I did not need any extra appliances then they could flatten them. SOOOOOOO much relief since then....give them an ask about it!
