Spacers -- how long & how to deal with the annoyance?

#1 Post by Metal Mouth TN »

I had my braces & spacers placed 3 days ago. The braces aren't bothering me but the spacers ARE DRIVING ME CRAZY!!

How long did you have to have the spacers in place?

Any advice on how to deal with the annoyance of them? I've been taking pain killers for the pain but they are literally driving me insane.

I'm trying not to whine to my family because it was me who initiated this self induced torture!!

I had them for 8 days, painkillers in the first 5 days, the last 3 days it didn't hurt much. I don't know for how long you'll have yours, but it will stop hurting eventually.

I had them for a week. Fortunately, the pain does go away.

I had them for a week back in January, and have another 2 coming up the end of the month, for another week. No pain but sheer annoyance drove me mad..and will again I'm sure.

I had mine for 3 weeks  Hmm, I think by the second week they didn't bother me!

You just need to grit your teeth and get on with it. You generally only need them for a week, so it's not too bad. Plus just think, spacers are the worst part of treatment so you're getting it out of the way to start with

I had mine in for about two weeks. the first few days were sooo painful, but I forced myself to try and eat harder foods. After a while, I couildnt even tell they were there.
Dont worry, once your teeth get used to their new spot, you will be fine :)

I had spacers for a couple months! My molars really didn't want to move and make room for the molar bands. I came to actually LIKE the blue rubber spacers as they were a breeze compared to the metal spacers we ended up using. Cheer up. It could always be worse!

The advice to grit your teeth should be taken literally! I had mine in for one week and then two weeks (separate times due to a cleaning). The were awful pretty much the whole time for me, but thankfully it was only temporary. Anyway, gritting your teeth aka clenching them may hurt, but it will actually increase the blood flow to your teeth roots which helps them heal faster which relieves the pain.

Yes! If you have pain at any stage of treatment, the best thing you can do is actually go ahead and try to eat and chew normally, through the pain. Relying on soft foods and not chewing on painful areas will ultimately just perpetuate it

Really? Grit my teeth? I'm having a horrible time using them to even eat. I've been living on soup and mashed potatoes (although I went wild tonight and had mac and cheese  ). I'll have to start working them.

I still have another week with them. :?
