I just got ceramic braces Monday and my mouth has so many sores, and my teeth don't touch together to chew, and I am just MISERABLE! Can someone please tell me this will get better and when?? I hate to whine, but I never thought I would feel this bad!

I promise it does get better. Unfortunately I can't tell you how long it will take to get better, but you'll suddenly just realize that you don't have so many sore places in your mouth to contend with, and that somehow you're managing to chew somehow (even with a screwed up bite and tons of hardware in your mouth).

That is what it was like for me anyhow, and I've just today had mine removed after two years and two months.

The secret is not to focus too much on the braces and just try to get on with life, otherwise you become obsessive about how uncomfortable they are and you end up making yourself more miserable. I'm sure you'll adjust in time to all your new hardware, and things will feel much less hopeless.

All the best of luck, and hoping your sentence will fly by quickly (with a minimum of discomfort).

It will get better!!!

I was horrified by how ripped up my cheeks were when I first got braces. It hurt so much I was terrified and had no idea how I would get through it.

In less than one week, everything healed up and I was fine. I haven't had a problem since. I get soreness when I have adjustments, but nothing like that first week.

Take it easy, take some aspirin, and if you like beer, I found it amazingly soothing on my cheeks.

Thank you so much! I just keep thinking why did I voluntarily put my self thru this....I have to keep my eye on the prize, right?

That's what I need---a good cold beer!!!
Another stupid question....do you remove all the wax from your moth before you eat or before you brush your teeth??

I often forgot to remove the wax before eating and brushing and it was gone by the time I was done. I guess I swallowed a lot of wax!

Oh, and the mouth can be very funny when healing. You can feel like something is so awful and that it's just not going away, and then *bam* the next morning you wake up and it's 80-90% healed.

As for beer, I spent about a week pretty much drunk because I found beer so soothing. Soda water didn't work as well, it had to be beer...although, champagne came close. I'm sure the alcohol has something to do with it.
I have no idea why, but it worked.

Oh! And check out my pics in my thread on my progress for encouragement!

Within two weeks I felt like I was born with braces, it was only really the first 4-5 days that I constantly felt like I was chewing on nuts and bolts.

Omg, I got my braces on Monday also and I feel the SAME EXACT WAY! I seriously had a small breakdown last night when I was getting ready for bed. I have so many sores everywhere too. I can't eat anything and my teeth don't fit together anymore either! It hurt to talk, it hurts to do everything. I can only drink out of a straw.

I told my husband if I would have known it would be this bad, I would never have done this. I'm so miserable :-( I too hate to be a whiner but I can't help it.

Everyone at work keeps telling me it will get better. But I feel like as soon as I try to go without the wax (which I have on every single bracket right now), that my cheeks will just get all ripped up again????

I called my ortho and they have this "magic wand" treatment thing so I did that and going to do it again tomorrow. They also gave me some medicated mouthwash. However, I still feel like I am at my wit's end here with all these sores.

I felt the exact same way after I got my braces on. I think a lot of people do. I could not chew for about a week because my teeth did not touch, and then things starting shifting and chewing got easier.

Don't worry, it will get better for you.

i agree with everyone else. it helped me to stick to liquid foods.. so it was a nice treat to have smoothies for lunch every day and have soup to myself at home. :-)

What is the "magic wand" treatment thing?

This is what it says about the Magic Wand on my ortho's website. I went and used it this morning and I'm going to go again next week. It does seem to help.

The "Magic Wand," technically called the Electro-Acuscope and Myopulse machine, was originally developed in a hospital environment for patients suffering from burns and serious injuries. Today this technology is used to treat athletic injuries and victims of accidents. Professional sports teams like the Chicago Bears and Bulls use this technology routinely so that SPAMMERS LIKE ME can get "back SPAM SPAM SPAMMING" more quickly.

The "Magic Wand" accelerates healing and repair of injured tissues of the body while relieving pain and discomfort. It works by using a computer to first evaluate a tissue's ability to conduct electricity (injured or painful tissues conduct more poorly than healthy, comfortable tissues). The "Magic Wand" then electronically stimulates the tissues to a more normal conduction rate. The "Magic Wand" results in incredibly rapid tissue repair, which means less pain.

We have found that the "Magic Wand" can be used in our office in two ways:

TMD Patients (Electro- Acuscope)
Orthodontics Patients (Myopulse)
Patients suffering from jaw and neck muscle pain related to Temporomandibular Disorders get remarkable relief and improved jaw function after only a few treatments with the Electro-Acuscope/Myopulse.

Orthodontic patients can use the "Magic Wand" to relieve the occasional soreness that may follow adjustments. The "Magic Wand" is available to all our orthodontic patients after every appointment. We encourage you to ask for it any time you want!!!

Use lots of wax and get Rincinol PRN from your local drugstore. You'll find it in the mouthwash section or near the other dental items. It forms a protective coating in your mouth to help sores heal.
