I've only just discovered that these braces are available - the info I've read varies from saying they can correct most problems to that they are only used for correcting teeth that are on view when a person smiles.

Does anyone know if they would be suitable for correcting an adult deep bite - my top teeth completely cover my bottom ones..an widening the narrow smile that often is found in people who sucked their thumbs as children! The treatment I've been offered is via damon braces but getting everything sorted in 6 months rather than 2 years sounds tempting. If they can correct problems so rapidly - i don't undersand why anyone would want any other type of brace - what am i missing / misunderstanding on these...are they probably not suitable for deep bites? Grateful for any advice.

I have 6month smile braces but I didnt have any issues with my bite. As far as I know these braces are only suitable for people who dont have anything wrong with their bite. I had a little bit of crowding at the front, with one one my canines too far forward. It doesnt take 6 months to fix all cases. Every case is different so I guess thats why people opt for different options. The only way your going to find out the options available to you is to go for several consultations. Although I am happy that I will only be in braces for 6 months, its only because I didnt have big issues to resolve.

We open deep bites all the time with Powerprox Six Month Braces.
The goal of the technique is generally anterior alignment (philosophically very similar to other cosmetic dentistry procedures such as porcelain veneers) We do not change the A-P bite significantly (overjets and underbites) but can reduce them greatly in many cases. It is a great option for those want a nice smile but do not want to get comprehensive braces of porcelain veneers.

The cause of the open bite tends to determine how quickly and how much it will open but personally I have opened very deep bites within 6 months in many cases.

while a nice smile would be a bonus - my main concern is solving the poor support to facial muscles that can accompany a deep bite. Although my top teeth totally overlap the bottom ones, all my teeth are nice and straight so smile is not too bad, if a bit narrow.

Does anyone know if the 6 month smile can change teeth so they offer better support to facial muscles. Also, is this system available in France or only US and UK.

I'd leap at this if it is an option - i don't mind wearing braces but lopping 18 months of the treatment time would be great, esp considering I'm in my thirties.

Both options will open the deep bite. Both options will give the same support to the facial muscles from bite opening.

As an aside a doc I know in the UK has been having some good success with botox to help with "turkey neck" I dont know what you really call it so please understand I am not trying to be insensitive if someone has a sagging neckline.

lol - no turkey neck or double chin yet but i think give it time....a good bite is really important in holding up facial muscles - as you cna see when older people take thier teeth out, their faces kind of collaspe!

dumb question, but why is the procedure called 'opening a deep bite'

You have a deep bite and you are opening what is called the vertical dimension thus we docs call it opening the bite.
