Scared to have surgery

I am really afraid to have surgery. I want to do it, but I am just SO scared by it. I'm always worried that I am going to die. And then I really have no excuse because it is elective surgery. I don't need it. It just seems a bit silly to me to put my life in risk when I don't really need to. But then I think that is just the fear talking. Help!
