Worse before it gets better?

#1 Post by hae703 »

Hello all,

I'm pretty new to these boards. I have had my braces on now for about 6 weeks. My teeth are already moving which I was amazed at, but in some ways they look worse than they did before. My two top front teeth are a bit larger than the rest and come down well over my bottom teeth, but now they are entirely uneven. I can't tell if one has pulled back/up or the other has come down further though. And there is a large space now between my front top tooth and the one next to it. I'm just wondering is this normal? I guess I sort of thought they would just gradually move into place I never realized they could get more out of place first.

I see the ortho on Friday to get my palate expander put in so I'll probably ask him about it, but while I was a little embarassed about the braces to begin with I'm feeling more embarassed now. It's silly I know, but I can't help it.

yeah thats what I hear from everyone. Don't worry it should all work out, your teeth have a lot of moving to do right now and they're not going to look optimal right away. I feel the same I don't like how mine look b/c they have so much leveling to do and gap closing. I'm trusting the ortho to do the best that he can and trying to do my part in keeping my teeth clean and using elastics.
Braced for 23 months 1 week and 3 days!
I had 4 extractions and all my wisdom teeth removed.
I decided to get removal retainers so it will be easier to floss.

I am still in the worse before better stage (at least in my opinion!) and it's been 8 months--between the derotating, and leveling, which created new gaps. I had one front tooth overlaping another, so now there is a gap there, which I hate! also, I had about a 3-4mm space between my Left canine and the tooth behind it, large, but not that noticeable, so with minipowerchains, he has pulled that canine back into place, closed the space, BUT--now it's in front of the canine, which is much more noticeable.......he keeps telling me to be patient! tomorrow I get my TPA removed and bands put on the back molars and hopefully powerchains on the front 4-6 teeth-to begin the process of closing all the gaps!! so, if nothing else, this process teaches you patience!!! good luck!

If you look at my story, you will see that after about 6 weeks, my top teeth just started curving upwards, and one of incisors is turned, when it was completly straight before. I also have a huge gap in one of my bottom teeth, and a small gap between one of my top teeth. I was worried till I looked at other people story's, and someone else had their top teeth all curving like mine, but the final result was perfect.
i wouldnt worry about it, I trust the braces are doing what they are supposed to.

Everything will move around on its way to where it is going. I had gaps that opened up, teeth that twisted. All sorts. It is only now - 1 year in that my teeth actually look straight and nearly where they should be. Don't worry. It definitely gets worse before it gets better.
