Hello, considering braces

#1 Post by seriousthinker »

Hi guys,

I just wanted to introduce myself. I am 25 years old and seriously considering a brace/braces. So far I've contacted one ortho to see how I start the ball rolling.

My other half doesn't think I need one but I know I do and my mum inderstands (I wish she'd pressed on for one when I was younger really though). Trouble is I picked the wrong time to think about it. I just gave up work to be a samh lol.

I spent last night reading posts and it feels good to see so many people on the journey I want to start :D

Don't let others' opinions interfere with your desire to get braces. Your teeth might be fine for them, but they're yours after all. Only you can tell if you're comfortable with the way they are or if they make you uncomfortable and are hindering any aspects of your daily life.

Ask yourself if you're okay with the idea of keeping your teeth the way they are, or if you'd rather invest and correct any flaws you might have within a few months/years.

I suppose it all depends on how you feel about your teeth and on what your orthodontist says.

Braces aren't exactly a small investment so there's nothing wrong with being reluctant and undecisive on whether you should get them or not. Just make sure it's your decision in the end and that you're doing it for yourself. Also, don't forget that it's never too late.

You have to do it for you. If you want it because you feel bad about your smile then go for it. I had a lot of people at work tell me that now wasn't a good time for me blah blah blah but in the end it's my face... my teeth so I went for it. I couldn't be happier.

Thanks guys. I think my husband is less eager for me because I guess he sees the pattern I follow. One min I'm fine and yes they're crooked but I can live with them and the next I worry and really want them sorted sooner rather than later. I don't mind photos taken straight on but from the side and speaking in front of people i feeling worse. Also, if my children end up with similar probs I want mine sorted before they remember if that makes sense.

One of my main drawbacks is being able to justify spending up to £5000 (I have no idea what work I'll need) when we're hoping to upgrade houses soon, my parents are on low income and I've just given up work to be a stay at home mum.....

I went back and forth on them for years with my dentist saying "you really should". My SO was on board but pretty concerned about the money, etc. I finally took the leap in December, though I went for linguals on the top and it took months for them to be made, so I just had them on last week. Now all I can say is I wish I'd done it sooner, I'd be done now!

You just have to do what's right for you.
