Molar bands question

#1 Post by Jay04 »

So I have a quick question. I'm getting my braces next week and I have spacers in at the moment on my bottom teeth.

Do the molar bands feel like the spacers? My spacers are really noticable as if i bite down,my top teeth make contact with them and I feel them digging in to my gums. They aren't too painful anymore, just uncomfortable so I was just wondering if its easy to get used to the molar bands? Do you ever forget they are on?

I do not feel my molar bands. Once your cheeks get used to the bracket side, you will forget they are there. The bands sit just below the biting surface of the tooth so you do not feel them when biting down (unlike with the spacers). From what I remember, getting the spacers out and the bands on was a welcome relief.

I just had braces put on this past Monday and once the molar bands are in position you don't really notice them until you chew, but you will no longer have that constant feeling of something stuck between your teeth like with spacers.

Just make sure before you leave the ortho's office that the hooks on the molar bands feel comfortable enough.

I didn't do this so I had to go in a few days later to have an adjustment made as the molar band hooks were rubbing under my tongue on one side. Once the ortho tech bent the hook back I had instant relief.

Good luck to you!

Hi Jay04,

The molar bands do not feel anything like the spacers. Before you leave, be sure you can close your bite. One of my bands was not low enough and I had a hard time chewing.

The bands are a piece of cake compared to spacers! It does take a couple of days to get used to having them in your mouth, but nothing a little wax cannot fix!

Best of luck to you in your braces journey!

I so glad I didnt get molar bands. My ortho is out of town and wants to keep it as easy and pain free so i just have brackets on them instead of bands.

I got my braces on a few days ago and was so surprised that I couldn't feel the molar bands at all. I have no clue they are there. :D

Some molar bands have a small button on the inner surface. This is for attaching elastics or wires, if they are needed.
Feel with your tongue, or ask your ortho, to find out if you have these, as they can be very uncomfortable as they rub against your tongue. If you have these, ask whether they are going to be needed and if not, if they can be ground away. Your ortho may prefer to put a ligature around them. This makes them smoother and you will not be irritated by them.

Why do some people get molar bands and other folks just have brackets?
I had my braces on for 2 years, 1 month, 2 weeks and 2 days.

fluffybottom-

I just love your name! I giggle whenever I see it...

Most people end up with molar bands (instead of just having brackets placed on their molars) because they have crowns (most times, the silver ones; but sometimes porcelain crowns, too) to which brackets do not adhere well. So, those teeth need to have metal bands placed around them, and the brackets are then placed on the band instead of the tooth. I have two of them and, most times, I don't even know they're there. Wish I could say the same about this dang pokey wire... :(

I'm getting molar bands and not brackets and I don't have crowns or fillings or anything. I think it's because the ortho wants to have the extra pulling power lol.

I have molar bands around every one of my molars apart from one, and i have a spacer in there ready for that tooth being banded this afternoon. The spacers didn't hurt me at all, and since having this last one for a week, i mostly forget its there. I dont have and crowns or fillings, my orthodontist said I need molar bands because of the surgery i'll be having. I don't really feel the bands either.
