Upper Front Tooth Movement

#1 Post by chloerae »

Hi all! I'm pretty new to the boards. I'm 27 & I've had my braces for about a week now. I've got severe crowding in a very small mouth. I will be getting extractions within the next month of two upper bicuspids and two lower bicuspids.

So I need to know if this is normal or if anyone else experienced anything like this?

The first night in braces when I flossed I noticed my normally crowded teeth to have a slight space between the front two teeth (which are not really crooked at all) making it very easy for the floss to glide through...

By the second night the space seemed to close up a bit and the floss was tight again. Most of the pressure I've been feeling over the last week has been in my front two teeth.

Anyway, when I went to floss tonight I noticed that my right front tooth looks like it is now lower than the left one... they look sort of lopsided, if that makes sense. It also seems to be starting to feel loose.

Could it be that my teeth are already moving so fast? And I sure hope they will line back up because they were even 'length' before.

Any feedback would be appreciated!!

Hi Chloerae!

It is possible for your teeth to move that fast. Especially in the beginning. Your teeth will line back up once there is enough room in your mouth to do so. As our teeth move, they sometimes get worse before they look amazing!

Best of luck to you!

wow that's awesome i didn't notice a real change till one month. I mena I felt the tightness and soreness and knew stuff was happening but I didn't notice it till later. As for the flossing I too noticed some areas where different to floss before the braces. Just keep an eye on your teeth and it's true it had to get ugly before it gets better. I sure your docs know just what they are doing.

What's happening to you is perfectly normal. It sounds like you are describing my first week in braces.

Thanks for the feedback all.

I was sort of freaking out, and ready to call my orthodontist (even though I was just there yesterday to get them to put bumpers on a couple of the brackets).

But I guess you all are right... I've heard "it'll get worse before it gets better" and while that is not so fun, I'm excited to see them start lining up again.

I'm reaaaally hopinh the movement of my teeth will exceed the ortho's expectations, therefore lessening my treatment time. They said it's possible, so I'm praying!!

I'm glad you asked this- I just got my braces on yesterday, and when I went to floss I could have sworn I had a slight gap between two of my bottom lower teeth, the floss just slid through. So it is possible.

Ok so I saw even more rapid movement in my front right tooth over the past week and decided to just go ahead and call my ortho for her to check it out. I'm talking about my front right tooth is now about 2cm 'longer' than the other tooth when they used to line up perfectly.

Turns out it is because of the way the teeth beside my front teeth are moving. On the right side I have a tooth that jets out slightly up and above the front tooth, so now my right front tooth is moving out to make room for that. The left side is not moving so drastically because there is not as much crowding there.

Additionally she is planning on giving me a 'wider smile' and so we're going to be changing my bite even more.

Anyway, I'm glad I went in because now my questions are answered. Unfortunately I look funny in the meantime, but it will pay off in the end.

On a different note I am getting 4 bicuspids and 2 wisdom teeth extractions at the end of the month and this should help unravel my crowding much faster! Yay!! (but i'm totally scared!!)

Teeth Straightening

#9 Post by yangortho »

During the initial stages of alignment, you may notice little spaces appear, then disappear, then reappear again. This is just part of the process. If it bugs you, point it out to you orthodontist at your next appointment and see if he/she can do anything about it. Usually, once your teeth are aligned and derotated, it is relatively easy to close any spaces that opened up during treatment.
