Extractions without getting braces for a few months?

I just had 4 teeth out (2 top, 2 bottom) I was braced(my top) the same day as my extractions. My good friend who is also going to get braces told me her ortho said she doesn't want her to get extractions done without putting her braces on within a couple weeks because something might collapse? Not sure what she meant by that but she freaked me out because I'm not going to get my bottom braced for some time since they have to completely align my top and my bottom teeth are already out. Anyone heard of this?

It is actually more rare to have your teeth extracted the same day as your braces go on. That was probably a long day for you!
I wouldnt worry about the time. I am sure your doc would not do anything that would alter your progress.

Thanks drrick, I have been hearing that having my braces put on the same day is rare from a few people, but my Ortho said they like to do that to get the gaps closing fast. It was a long day...and very painful week!

My oral surgeon and ortho wanted me to have some time to heal before my braces went on, so I think I waited at least a week or two after the extractions. Mine were segmented... I got my lowers on first and then shortly after the back part of my uppers, and then the front lol.

I remember I had 2 teeth extracted on the right at the first time, and 2 teeth on the left one week later. Then I had my brace on one more week after the extractions.

Yea I dont think weeks matter, but I'm not getting my bottoms on until my top is completely aligned and that will probably be a few months. I just hope that isnt too long.

It's probably nothing to worry about!
My extractions were back in Feb (two 2nd molars) and March (upper 'baby' canine), 3 weeks apart. So they will have been 'out' for about 4 and 5 months when my braces go on, which is later this month.

My understanding is that the ortho might want to make sure your teeth are okay with the braces on, and that they are move-able. At least, that's what I read or heard somewhere. Some teeth are so difficult (and could "collapse" whatever that means) that they want to make sure your teeth are good candidates first before extracting. Does that make sense?
