Getting braces in 2 weeks

#1 Post by Nume1278 »

Hi Im Nume,
I'm new to this site and new to braces. I will be getting braces in 2 weeks and I wanted to chat with real people about braces. My first concern is how long should I take off from work and second on the same day that I will get my braces I have an evening class. I am wondering if I would be in that much pain that i should take the next day off from work and if i should stay home from class that evening. i know that everyone is different but it would be nice to get an opinion poll.

Thank you so much

I think mine was 1.5 hour appointment. As for pain the first day is usually smooth second day I started feeling in it.

Hello,

Congratulations on getting braces. I bet you are excited!

My appointment lasted about 1 to 1 1/2 hours. So I would allow for
atleast 2 hours. As for class and work the next day, I don't think you need to take any time off. In my experience, I did not have any pain that would warrant time off of anything. I did however, have overall soreness the next day, not pain but my teeth were sore.

I think the main thing people are not prepared for when they get braces is the "shock" you go through. Meaning, the "I can't believe I did this to myself" shock. You have these foreign objects in your mouth, when you look in the mirror, you see yourself like you have never seen before, the inside of your mouth doesn't feel the same... It is a bit shocking.

On my first day, I remember my mouth feeling really big, almost as if it was swollen but it was not swollen at all. I do remember going from dry mouth to too much saliva and back and forth. That actually lasted about the first two weeks. Buy some Breathsavers, this seems to do the trick.

So, I guess my overall opinion is....if you are feeling fine, go to class and work.

Good Luck.

I only took the day off because I wanted at least a day to get used to the braces and wasn't sure how I was going to feel the day they went on. It was my coping with the new change. I did go to my evening class with school because it was the first night. The next day it was back to normal with me and routine. I did feel soreness the next day and found eating was really difficult. If anything I was cranky because I was hungry but couldn't chew food.

Seriously If I was you I would get all the forbidden foods you really should avoid with braces out of your system now. The weekend before I got braces I ate everything I wanted because I wasn't sure when I would feel well to eat like normal after I got the braces.

Hi Nume! Are you just attending the evening class or are you lecturing? Speaking clearly might be a bit of a problem - I still have a lisp especially after I have been chatting for a while. After I got my braces 3 weeks ago I didn't feel any pain at all...the expanders I had for a week before the braces didn't hurt either. It's only while I'm eating that I really feel uncomfortable and I take ages to finish my food and I'm not eating as much as I used to. But as to work, as long as you don't have to speak non stop, you should be fine.

Good luck!

I did absolutely no work for the first 2 days I had Invisalign. It wasn't pain that was the problem, it was just so wierd having this thing in my mouth I could not think about anything else for the whole 2 days. I sat at my desk, and I thought about my teeth, and I worried about the next time I would need to eat, and I worried if they were working right. I worried a lot.

But after those couple of days things started getting better, and I found I went longer and longer not thinking about them, and actually started to do some work. By the following week I was totally back to normal.

If it was me with hindsight, take a couple of days off work if you do not have an understanding boss. Go to the evening class though, maybe it'll help distract you.

Good luck.

Thank you all for you help. I don't have to do much talking in class or work. So I may or may not go on with my day after braces :).

Thanks again everybody.

pain is irrelevant! no pain no gain, right?

When my teeth are sensitive I know that my braces are doing its job! On a serious note, you'll be more concerned with getting used to the feel of braces in your mouth then the pain.. at least that's how it was for me.

Hi there! I am getting braced on September 23rd. My ortho does not offer afternoon, evening, or Saturday appointments for the first two appointments so I will have to return to work immediately after being braced. I was told to just take some Tylenol and I should be okay! I'm a little nervous as I do speak all day for a living but by the time I get back to work I should only have a half day left, so I'll just try to take it easy and talk a little less! :)

welcome nume,
you are correct in that everyone is different. For me there was no physical pain immediately after being braced and I still haven't had pain even after a couple of adjustments. The psychological issue of feeling awkward was my biggest issue and still is (so many here would say "get over it"...which just goes to show you that everyone is different in how long it takes to adjust). Good luck, I hope the process goes well for you.

My appointment when I got braced was 2 hours, and that included getting x-rays, molds, and all the records done, as well as getting the braces on. I took the afternoon off work. My teeth started to get a bit sore that evening, and the next day they hurt, but not enough to merit me taking the day off work - it was like the pain from overdoing it at the gym. Some ibuprofen took the edge off.

Plan on eating soft foods at first and things that you don't have to bite into - 2 weeks in and I'm still struggling with sandwiches!
