Hi everyone ,

I had my first orthodontic assessment today for my tmj problems + minor crowding on the top row. The ortho recommended a splint treatment for a month and a half to determine if my symptoms (headaches, pop locking, etc) are cause by tmj or some other problems. This splint will be in place for a month and a half and costing me about $400. Following that he recommends that I do Damon3 braces for about 2 years. What I would like to know is whether there is an actual point in going ahead with the splint if it will be something that I am using for only a month and a half. They will be customized but once I have the braces I will no longer to use them during or after as my teeth would have shifted by then. Furthermore, what is the going rate for Damon3 braces?

This is all pretty new to me but something I've been wanting to do for a long time. I would really appreciate your comments and suggestions.

I have been told that the splint aids in retraining your facial muscles when you have TMJD. If you think about it, the muscles in your face have gotten very used to working from one position. Now you want them to operate the joint in another manner. It takes time and I believe that the splint is part of that process.

I understand what you are saying. What I am wondering is whether there is a real need to order the splint if I'll only be using it for a month and a half before the braces go on. From what I know, the splint will be custom made and once I have braces on I won't be able to use it during or after since my teeth and jaw would have changed by then.

I do things in a similar way only I tend to go a bit longer than 6 weeks. More like 3 months. Same goal though it seems...to relax the facial (and often neck/shoulder) muscles. This can help with jaw pain headaches etc.

The splint is also a diagnostic tool.
If the splint does not alleviate the pain then the treatment plan can change considerably.
