5 weeks, still no sandwiches...

#1 Post by hypocrite opportunist »

So it's been 5 weeks since I have last bit into food. My two upper front teeth have been soooo sensitive, all the way through to the root, since the day I was braced. I tried to bite into a deviled egg this afternoon and even THAT was too much pressure! Ack! The rest of my teeth have given me very little pain (just localized tooth pain that changes all the time), but these front two have never improved. Any thoughts as to why this is??

Is your ortho trying to do too much, too fast?? Possibly too much pressure from something.. a too heavy wire perhaps?

No, I'm actually in the lightest wire they have! I wonder if I should call the office? My first appt isn't until November.

I was told that I wasn't to bite into anything anyway but should tear the food with my hands and pop it into my mouth....I've been eating burgers with a knife and fork lol so I shouldn't worry too much.

But my friend had braces and could bite into a nice juicy apple- I'd be too scared of breaking the things!

I literally had chicken fried rice the day after I got my braces.

Hello, I just wanted to let you know that I had localized pain in my front teeth the first couple of months. But after that my teeth straightened out a bunch and the pain has decreased so much. Don't worry it will get better. I was still able to eat most foods I just cut everything into small bites and chewed with my back teeth. Remember it will get better!

If it bothers you too much don't be afraid to call the ortho. Other than that, I would just cut up the pieces of food and not try to bite into anything that hurts too much.
Wow, they were able to eat an apple?! I can't imagine that I would be able to without breaking all of my brackets off!

I think some poeple just take a bit longer to adjust to braces, you'll probably find that all the sudden the pain just goes.

It takes a while for the front teeth to not seem so sensitive. I had to tear up sandwiches for about 4 months before I could bite into them. As I type this, I cannot bite into a sandwich after my adjustment 3 days ago.

Sorry to see that you are still sore. Hope it gets better soon!

My teeth felt the same until the light wire got changed. I felt almost instant relief in the bigger wire, as weird as that sounds. Six months in I am biting into apples.

It took at least six weeks or so before I could bite anything with my top teeth. They just felt numb. I just got my lower six bottom teeth braced this week, and it's the same thing, can't bite with my bottom teeth.

Hi - I had a pretty similar experience with my front teeth - even if I bit into a soft banana I swear my top front teeth bowed out in the first weeks. After about two months I got the confidence to bite into soft things, but even now it isn't confortable biting into rolls or wraps - as a previous post said, I just break things up and put it in the back of my mouth.
For me, I am expecting this will last a long time cause my top front teeth are the most uneven, and with my overbite I think each adjustment will involve movement with my top choppers.
It has gotten alot better though - so you never know, I might be chomping down on steak with my front teeth in a few month - here's hoping!

I really miss biting into something, the front teeth are still too sensitive to bite into even soft bread, so I have been either cutting food up with fork and knife or tearing it into small pieces before putting it in my mouth.

Apparently it is good to keep using the molars to chew to get the circulation going and move the teeth along. My teeth seem to take turns to be sore but it is nothing unbearable. It is also encouraging though because then I know my teeth are moving :)

I stare at my teeth everyday and I know they are moving because the wire is straightening :) So the soreness pays off ;-(#)

Got braced 9 days ago and I can't bite into anything with my front teeth...tried a banana yesterday...really slowly, but it was still too painful. Aside from that, everything else has been fine...cutting up sandwiches and all that, and chewing with my back teeth. I will say that eating salads (and I eat them all the time) is quite an adventure, cos the braces latch on to everything...lettuce, tomatoes, whatever....so I often have to keep chewing and ignore the impulse to use my tongue to pick the food out until I'm done....then it's off to the bathroom to rinse and pick.
