We all pretty much go through this :( Well mine didn't exactly taste like blood and nickels, but I understand the ulcers and the pain you are going through.

The best thing you can do to help the ulcers is put wax on any brackets/wires that are giving you pain. I also find taking a multi vitamin and using mouthwash help the ulcers calm down.

The tenderness when you eat usually gets better in a couple of days. When you can kinda start eating solids again try cutting things up and putting them in your mouth instead on biting directly into them.

It can be pretty rough at the start of treatment and after adjustments, but it really will be worth it in the end :)

I hear ya! At the moment I just keep thinking how on earth am I going to stick this for two years plus?

I'm sure it will get easier for us though, just try and focus on the end result.

yes, if you got a little package of wax from your ortho USE IT on all of the pokey brakets and wires that are poking your mouth, if they didn't give you any you should be able to buy some from the drug store/ walmart etc. Salt water rinse will help heal your mouth. It will get better... hope that it's sooner rather than later for you.

It is definitely rough the first week (or so). Wax is a godsend at the beginning - then after a while you won't need it so much.

Hang in there - I'm at almost 2 months and sometimes I actually forget they are there. And I can eat just about anything now - even some of the forbidden foods as long as I am careful.

Good luck - once you get through the first week or two you will be past the worst of it!

I feel your pain...literally! Good news is your mouth will get used to it and the pain/blisters etc will go away. Hang in there.

Three words: SALT WATER RINSES!

I had about 6 canker sores in my mouth when I came home from work the day after I got braces. I got some benzocaine, but also started salt water rinses. The next day, I couldn't believe the difference. There was only one spot in my mouth that was bothering me at all, and that wasn't even so bad. I ended up only using the benzocaine once.

I've had braces for 7 weeks now and some weeks are better than others. Last week was great, this week I'm back to sore again. I will try those salt water rinses, for sure -- and I have lots of dental wax in store for weeks like this. But I'm not nearly as sore now as that first week -- that *is* a rough one, I agree! (Blood and nickels -- love it! You're a good writer! :-) )
