Blame it on the alcohol

So, I know drinking soda is a No-no for braces (which I luckily never do), but what about alcohol? Can drinks such as beer negatively affect your braces?

Nothing was off limits for me while in braces. Just had a dental check up the other week and I have no cavity's or any other issues. Just do a good job brushing and flossing. So I say drink up :)

I think the "no soda" is just because of the citric acid (it can wear away the enamel that's exposed but not the braced enamel) and possibly the coloring of dark sodas (staining ligs). But I drink diet Coke anyway, just with a straw so it's not completely washing over my front teeth.

I've never heard anything about alcohol, so I'm pretty sure it's safe!

I drink so much soda, its unreal (I know, I am an addict :D ) However, when I see my ortho they say my teeth look fantastic....so I see no prob with the soda. I also do not have clear ligs for this reason!

I'm with appygirl. I drink too much pop (soda), especially dark ones like Coke and Pepsi. It's only been three months and I haven't had any problems yet, but I feel guilty for ingesting so much sugar.

Beer and those vodka mix drinks have a lot of sugar in them so I guess it would be just as harmful to your teeth as drinking soda :?

Regardless, i'm not going to stop drinking them haha

Thanks everyone! I guess moderation is key. I didn't really think about the timing of getting my braces before, but now that the holidays are upon us, I'm thinking of all of the holiday parties, meals, (Thanksgiving!!), etc. that I'm now going to face braced.

I'm sure that it will all work out! Thanksgiving is sure going to be interesting, though...

I usually drink Vodka and diet Coke. But now with braces on I don't know what the Coke will do to wire and brackets. I have seen videos where Coke eats through metal. I also read where Coke can unglue the brackets. Just to be safe, I am drinking Crystal Light and Vodka. I only drink on days ending in "Y" so I
think I should be ok. Actually, I only imbide once or twice a week.

I think as long as it isn't those sugary mixed drinks, you are fine. Drinking beer shouldn't be a problem. I asked my ortho about wine (big wine drinker here) and she said it was okay. However she might have mistaken me for someone who drinks a glass per week.

The only problem with wine is that red wine can stain. I live with the stains.

I was told by my ortho to go on a low-sugar diet...but I think that was for general tooth-health as opposed the period of time I'm in my brace.

Two days after getting top ceramic braces, they really were irritating the inside of my upper lip.
I drank alcohol last night, and i know alcohol dehydrates you so i am wondering if that was the cause or if the archwires are working.

I drink soda (diet), alcohol, tea and coffee. I just make sure I brush, or at least swish some water in my mouth after I am done. It's OK to drink liquids, just be sure to not hold it in your mouth and clean your teeth afterwards.
Had full mouth metal braces for 21 months. Debonded April 2013. Now wearing clear plastic retainers every other night.
