Should I call? My upper molar is hitting on lower molar band

#1 Post by BraceFace2o1o »

I currently only have my upper braces so far, but I do have my molar bands on the bottom (1 on each side, on the 1st molars). The reason I haven't got my lower braces too is because I have a deep bite (all around really, not just my front teeth) and to be honest, I wonder why he put the lower molar bands on when my top teeth cover my lower teeth :?

Anyway, my upper right 1st molar keeps hitting on my lower right molar band (because my lower 1st molar is slanted/tilted in towards my tongue, the chewing surface of my upper tooth is hitting on the part of the band where the archwire would fit in). So when I try to close my bite during sleeping and eating, my upper tooth smashes on the side of the molar band, and because of this none of back teeth actually meet anymore... eating is proving difficult as well. I couldn't eat solid foods for the past few days due to my teeth literally aching, but that seems to have eased off and now I have started eating food that needs to be chewed, yet I can't eat it because my teeth don't meet because of that one band.

I really don't want to be a pain, so maybe I should just leave it until my appointment in 4 weeks time? Or would you call up if you were in my position? (I could always call in, too, to show the receptionist in person... as it's not always the easiest to explain over the phone).
It's just eating is proving really difficult and I am also worried that I could chip my upper tooth if it keeps smacking onto the metal band below, especially during my sleep as I am a grinder!

If I am not making any sense and my explanation sounds odd, I can try and get a picture and post it.
Braces: Metal fixed upper and lower
Estimated treatment time: 18-24 months
Braces Removed: August 2013 (after 33 months in braces)
Retainers: Upper & lower essix and lower bonded

Hi Chrystal -- I don't know the answer to your question but thought I'd write anyway. All I know is that my teeth and whatever they're wrapped in are always hitting each other, so maybe it's just one of those braces things? But I'm sure the ortho's office would welcome a phone inquiry just to make sure. They probably don't want to have to fix something if it's going wrong. How's that for an answer? :-)

Hi revontuli,

I guess a call to my Ortho wont hurt, I just don't want to be one of those patients that constantly phones up with 'problems' that aren't really a problem

Thinking about it, I remember when he put my lower left molar band on he kept asking me to close, open and so on and was checking how I was biting down on to it, but he didn't do it at all for the right, the one that's bashing. I can cope, I need to lose some weight anyway ha ha ha :D.

i would call...

after they fitted my lowers i managed to snap a lower molar bracket off, during sleep..it was so close to the chewing side that while dreaming i clenched my teeth hard on it...and it went click!

at that point in my treatment i had to "find" my bite...i could bite in different positions.. so i guess thats why she missed this ...

I've had similar issues from day one. Some of my upper teeth clang down right on top of the lower brackets. I did call my ortho and they said it's just part of it till the teeth move. I've noticed some got better as some new ones started. I can tell it comes with the territory. I had to learn not to bite all the way down for now. I've done it in my sleep too many times. It's frustrating!

I called them yesterday and they had a slot available for 2pm on Friday. I will see what he says, he might even say it's ok, but I just want to check just for peace of mind really.

But I do grind my teeth rather bad at night and when I wake up the ache in that tooth that's hitting on the molar band is awful

Hi bink111, my Ortho shaved part of the band slightly and it totally solved the problem. I've not had an issues since then.

These issues come up with me too from time to time (mostly right after an adjustment). For me it has always been temporary till a particular tooth moves - then it's better. I can understand the frustration though, especially while you're sleeping! Glad it was an easy fix though. :D
