Just got braces on and turbo bites are cutting my tongue bad

#1 Post by Syllerina »

Hey everyone! Im Emily and I just got braces (Damons) on Tuesday. I also got turbo bites put in.
The braces dont bother as much anymore and it has only been 4 days, but the turbo bites are KILLING ME!
They are cutting my tongue, i got two ulcers on my tongue. I have no idea where to place my tongue because the bites are cutting them or touching them any place i decide to place my tongue.
Sleeping is difficult because i cant swallow my spit because im stil trying to find a good place for my tongue to rest and it ends up cutting my tongue anyway.
Could it be that the bites are too long and not filed back enough?
I would be able to manage with them if they werent cutting my tongue and if i werent getting sores on my tongue.
Its horrible. Is there any other alternative then having these bites on? I doubt my Ortho would take them out anyway,

Is there any advice? Please.

thanks emily.

Emily, bite turbos really suck. I called them terrible turbos haha. You will get used to them, it just takes time. Do warm salt water rinses to help with the sores in your mouth. Once your teeth start to shift, you will find that they get shorter. Hang in there, before you know it, the will come out :)

They shouldnt be 'cutting' you. Are they sharp when you feel them with your fingers?
Are they the mtal or composite (tooth colored filling material) type.

Any sharp edges can be smoothed down if they are actually cutting you. If they are just rubbing then that is a trickier situation and you might have to wait that out.

I'm sorry about your bite turbos. I have had mine in for 5 1/2 months now. They really bothered me in the beginning. I had the same problems you are having. My tongue was so sore. I actually for awhile put wax in between my turbos. I have a gap between mine that my tongue would go in and then my tongue would get irritated. I would mainly put the wax on them at night. I still don't like my turbos, but I have gotten much more used to them and they don't bother my tongue like they used to. Unfortunately, it's one of those things that only time will really make better. But, do try putting a little wax on them - especially at night. Hang in there, it will get better.

Turbos definitely suck at first. I've had mine on for 9 months now but I don't even notice them anymore. It took me about 5 weeks to get used to them . I got thru it my putting orajel on the tip of my tongue where the sores were and by using the orajel mouth rinse a few times a day. It doesn't stay in place for very long but I also found that putting wax on the back of the turbos really helped the sores on my tongue to heal up. I couldn't sleep at first either but over time my tongue just gradually ended up finding a new place to rest inside my mouth. I hope your tongue heals up fast and that it gets better soon for you - good luck with your turbos

Hi Emily!

Ugh! The dreaded tongue pain!

I have a palatal arch and the stupid little holders on the INSIDE of my upper teeth used to hurt me SO BAD.
My tongue was constantly cut up. I even cried about it...it was so bad. I went back to my ortho and he said just keep using the wax.
Probably 6 months went by and it finally got better. I really believe your tongue just needs to toughen up.
Hang in there girl...it will get better. :rose: :)

Hi Syllerina, I have turbos too and they are not great to say the least. My ortho said ''it'll just feel like you have a lump of toffee stuck in your teeth" (! ... um no it feels like a big lump of plastic... :D ) I have them on my top teeth and the one on the right hand side cut up my tongue pretty bad for a day or so until I ran my finger along it and found that there was a little spiky bit where it had set into a point. That was the bit that was doing all the damage! So (and I'm not sure if this is a good idea) I grinded the turbo against my bottom tooth for a while until the point wore down a little (I'm pretty sure the ortho would've filed it for me but the surgery is 100 miles away from me!) and it hasn't given me much bother since. I have to say that you do get used to them- just keep trying to eat with them. It took me two weeks but after that my diet is back to normal and I hardly feel them anymore. You're tongue just has to get used to them, though maybe ring your ortho and ask if they can file off sharp points etc :)

I feel your pain - literally!

Got my upper braces on a few days ago, and the turbos have the tip of my tongue all nice and red right now. I'm guessing mine are ceramic because they were pre-formed like the metal ones and they just bonded them like the brackets on the front of the teeth.

I thought they would bother me more than they do when they touch my bottom teeth. That actually doesn't bother me at all, but the tongue irritation and actually trying to chew with these things is horrible. From my prior experience with braces in high school, I figured I'd still be able to eat semi-normal food the first day (and I was able to eat a burrito from Taco Bell without much pain) but trying to chew the thing up to swallow it was really tough.

Not a huge problem for me now, as I have a couple incisors that were rotated slightly (sideways if you can believe it, not turned to the side) and now that they're moving, I wouldn't be able to bite into anything that solid anyway. Just pushing slightly on the chewing surface of those teeth results in a sharp pain.

But when those teeth do stop being so sensitive, I'll probably be interested in eating solid food again. Since I can't bite down with my molars now, I've thought about trying to use the turbos to chew with, like molars. It seems crazy, but with the turbos on the back and the brackets on the front, my two front teeth actually feel wider from front to back than my molars do from side to side!

My only concern with doing this is potentially knocking the turbos off. I have to wonder just how strong they are, and how well they're bonded to my teeth.

With my luck, I'll figure out some way to chew, and it'll all change next month when I go back to get my lowers put on!
