Unexpected extractions and treatment time?

#1 Post by Sourire »

Hi everyone!

I've been in upper braces for about two months now. Initially, the treatment to fix my slightly crowded teeth was supposed to be possible without any extractions as my orthodontist estimated that IPR would do the trick to make more space in the upper arch. However, during my last appointment the ortho said that the teeth have been moving amazingly well but that there wouldn't be enough room for them without extractions. My smile would be pretty at the end but according to her, we'd probably have severe problems with my bite (which was btw flawless before the treatment started). So I just had my two molars extracted last week which went very well.

If any of you guys have had some unexpected extractions during your treatment, I'd be interested to know what it did to your estimated treatment time? My ortho said that it is very likely that the treatment time will be shorter but I can see that these pretty gaps are not gonna be closing super fast!

Hi Sourire! I also had some "unexpected" extractions in preparation for Braces. I knew I had to get all 4 wisdom teeth pulled, but then I was told that if I didn't have 2 upper Premolars removed as well, that my teeth wouldn't have enough room to move. I was very upset about that, I just didn't want to let 6 teeth go at once but now I am glad I did because it cut down my treatment time by 6 months. Instead of 24 months in Braces I will now have them off this May or June which would make it 18 Months. I do not regret it one bit! I had all 6 teeth extracted and had my braces put on all on the same day Ouch! lol No regrets though, it has improved my smile tremendously, I trust my Ortho and he made a great decision

I also had extractions that I wasn't expecting leading up to braces. Much like tashay, I expected to have all of my wisdom teeth extracted, but in addition to that I lost both of my upper pre molars and another tooth from the bottom (don't know the name of that one - sorry!) so I got to lose 7 teeth at once. So much fun :?

I would say it took about 6 months to really see my gaps closing and making good progress, but I don't regret it one bit! Although I hadn't been given a treatment time that didn't factor extractions into the process, I would say that having them done made a HUGE difference in my treatment time. I'm almost done now at 18 months, and there is no way that this would have been possible had I kept my teeth.

Best of luck to you and take care of those extraction sites!!

Also, a note to tashay - I checked out your blog and your teeth are AMAZING! Holy movie star. Jeaaalllooouussss :)

That is exactly what happened to me

My orthodontist originally said I won't need any extraction but after wearing an expander for 8 months along with 5 months of upper and lower braces, he said that I would need 2 of my upper premolars extracted. I actually just got them done 3 days ago.

Don't worry about the gaps. They will close pretty quick. My brother had 6 teeth extracted and he said the gaps closed in no time.

aw thanks SO much! :o Its so weird to have anyone say that about my teeth since they'd been crooked so long, but hey we're both in the Homestretch!!! yay for 18 months! I do think the extractions helped speed it up for me especially since I had a lot of crowding. It's so worth it, but also a little scary! No regrets here though, Now just waiting for them to come off!
Thank you for checking it out, do any of you have blogs? good luck :D
