Weird bite situation and desperate

#1 Post by 24braceface »

I have a really weird bite situation and don't know what my options are. When I was 16, my teeth shifted and gave me somewhat of an open bite. Besides that, my teeth were perfect. I got braces put on at 17 and my lower teeth came out which gave me a slight speech problem because my teeth hit when they talk. I've heard that pulling the lower teeth out is common and standard, however it did not agree with me.

Anyway since it feels that my lowers are out too far and my teeth do hit when I talk, I thought I needed surgery. The surgeons say my bite is too good for surgery and that my occlusion is perfect. When I bite down my occlusion is in fact perfect. However I posture edge to edge and when I rest my jaw it's edge to edge.

Has anyone heard of anything like this? What can be done? One ortho said that he could shorten my teeth to create more space I guess so my teeth wouldn't hit when I talk...what do you think of this?

How can I fix this? I don't trust class III elatics, because I figure once the elastics come off the teeth will just shift back. What are other methods of getting the teeth to go back? Can the ortho create room in the mouth to make them go back? Or can the uppers be moved forward? Can my teeth in fact be shortened so they don't hit? What about expanders? What can I do to get a stable result?

If anyone has any answers, please help!!

I wish I could offer a solution, I have the same problem (I think)

It's when you say words like.... jaw, shoe, jog, championship (two collisions in that word right? :P)

I got braces in an attempt to fix it, but i'm not sure if it's going to be resolved at the end.

You need more professional opinions. I don't know the answer, but I do know that I wouldn't allow anyone to shorten my teeth as you mention.
