So, it's been two years since I first started wearing braces and now it's only TWO WEEKS away when I get them off. Very excited to say the least!

BUT...I'm kind of disappointed in the choice of retainers. I only have one choice: the wired Hawley retainer. Aren't we living in a "wireless" society? I don't think I will be able to use the clear Essix one since it is not adjustable.

However, I have heard there is Hawley retainer that has a clear wire in the front...anyone have any experience with this? Here is a pic...it's called the ASTICS Hawley Retainer (using ASTICS plastic as the "clear" wire)



My orthodontist does not offer it...so I was wondering: can I go see an orthodontist for my last appointment that does offer it? Would it be worth the trouble? What do you think? I like my Orthodontist, but since he doesn't offer the clear Hawley retainer, couldn't I go to an orthodontist that does? I'm not sure how it would work out with my payment plan though since the retainer was obviously included in the price and I've already fully paid for my braces...

I think you would have to get a regular Hawley from your ortho, since you paid for it. Then go find some one that does this new one. They would obviously charge you for molds and what not, but i guess if its worth it to you, why not? It does look pretty cool.

Hmmm..another idea is that I could have it refunded (since it hasn't been made yet) and go buy it somewhere else, but I'm not sure if that is allowed or not though...

Well my choice would be to keep the traditional Hawley just in case something goes wrong with that new one. I'm one of those Always have a back-up people. Then you have the new one you like, but if something goes wrong with it you have your original retention to fall back on. But thats just me.
