Is Damon any different to normal fixed braces? Thinking of getting it, not sure if it's just marketing or there's actually any difference

Damon braces are self-ligating (they don't use ligatures), which are different than "regular" braces. Damon, however, is just a brand name.

I'm not sure that self-ligating is any better than normal braces, though!

I think another difference is that you have fewer appointments (since you don't need ligs replaced). I have Damon's and I like them a lot, though I double there is any real advantage to them in terms of your actual results.

I have the Damon 3MXs which is their all metal basic SL bracket. They are very good, I think that that ligature retention brackets are equally effective. Yes, they toot their own horn and claim that the archwire isn't restricted with regard to linear horizontal movement across the arch. You can find commentary as to pro and con here on this site.

I have read they are good at expanding your arch (meaning, they'll tilt your teeth out a little bit, creating a little more space for your teeth). Many people apparently don't need extractions if you go the damon route.

I think if I could have done it again, I would requested damon, and ipr only, and tads. It's amazing all the different ways you can get braced to accomplish the same thing.

I just got damon clear braces a couple weeks ago. From about 5+ feet away, you can't even see them on my teeth...it's amazing! From what I understand, they work faster than traditional braces and they use a memory wire which works with the heat of your moth. The wire is constantly trying to go back to it's original shape. Weird, but very cool! There are more differences but it looks like others have already mentioned them.

I don't have damon and I have memory wires too.. don't all orthodontics use "memory" wire? The kind that is flexible in room temperature but "work" with the heat of your mouth?

That's a good question...I'm not sure if all braces use memory wire or not. I thought it was just a damon thing, but apparently not. Anyways, it's pretty cool technology nonetheless.

Yep. Memory wire is not unique to Damons.

Memory wires are NiTi wires. Virtually all orthodontists use them. Damon braces are different because they use direct marketing to the public. There has been no difference shown in the scientific literature. See the following for more:
