Braces removed yesterday and I have a question.

#1 Post by lindesd »

I just noticed that it is very very easy to floss. I mean hardly any effort at all to get floss in between my teeth. Where as before with the braces on, it was more difficult. Do you think this is the beginning of gaps trying to open or, is it supposed to be a little bit more loose without the braces on. I don't really know what to expect. I am wearing the Essix retainer. Also, I have heard conflicting info on retainer care. Can I or can not drink with them in. And, how do I clean them.

I can't answer you about the gap. I just got mine off a few weeks ago and the only area there is no contact between my teeth is where I had a metal band so I assume that will close up.

They didn't say anything to me about not drinking with the retainer in. It would be almost impossible for me to take it out for liquids though since I'm pregnant and have to drink constantly to avoid dehydration. As for cleaning they told me to clean it with a toothbrush and toothpaste.

I have the same issue. Really hard to floss b/f braces. Really easy now. That's normal.
I also have Essex retainers. I drink with them in. If it's a clear drink--I just drink it normally. If it's coffee or something colored, I use a straw.
As for cleaning the retainers, toothpaste and a toothbrush can scratch the Essex retainers. I bought the Sonic Bright system from DentaKit.com and I love it.

I was told by my dentist that teeth naturally have a tendency to move forward so the gaps that you may have now will tighten up over time even with the retainer. I have a bigger gap around my teeth that thad the molar band and he said I shouldn't worry about it because it will close on their own.
