I think my braces caused massive cankers and swelling...

#1 Post by Nathaniel »

Hi everyone,

I just recently got my braces installed on Wednesday as a part of my double jaw + genio treatment plan; they told me I should expect pain from the movement of the teeth and being sensitive to pressure. I didn't get much pain though I did feel the sensitivity.

I felt like I was doing great until yesterday when I noticed large cankers from what I suspect are the brackets rubbing against the cheeks. This morning, I have some light swelling from the problem.

Has anyone ever had such severe canker sores where it caused some swelling? If so, how long did it take for the swelling and/or cankers to retreat?

Thanks very much for your time!

Nathaniel,
Go get some Canker Covers they will make you feel better. I am currently suffering from mega-cankers and speak from experience...they will help. Your cheeks will start to toughen up in a week and then the rubbing won't bother you and hopefully no longer produce these cankers.
Good Luck!

Frequent salt water rinses should help too. Like 4 times a day. After a year I still have some spots the get very sore, and the rinse really helps.

Have you tried putting wax over the brackets? That was the only thing that got me through the first week. Now it seems like I've gotten more used to it; it's only if I talk or sing for several hours straight that they bother me.

You need to cover the offending brackets with dental wax and do some warm salt water rinses.

I would also suggest a product called Rincinol PRN. You can find it in a bottle at your local drugstore (in the mouth care product section). DentaKit.com also sells Rincinol PRN in individual packets. It forms a multi-hour shield over the mouth sores.

If the swelling continues or gets worse, you may have an allergy to nickle or to your latex elastics. Speak to your orthodontist about that.

Thanks everyone for your responses! I've picked up a pack of Canker Covers, rinsing with salt water several times a day, and am putting wax on the brackets. the cankers are still there but I will hope they'll go away along with the swelling in a week or so. Admin, I'll be on the look out for that rinse and speak with my ortho!

Thanks again everyone :)
