How long until you could eat/talk normally?

Hello!
My braces aren't coming on for a couple of months yet, but when they do I'm hoping to book myself a holiday soon afterwards as a treat for the suffering I am about to endure
What I'm wondering is, how long after first getting your braces were you able to eat and talk normally? And how long until it didn't hurt you? I want to do my trip if I can, but it's also going to be very expensive so I don't want to waste money if I'm just going to be in pain the entire time!

I think it just depends...
When I got my top braces on, it only took a few days and I wasn't in any major pain. It was a bit sore, but not too bad and took me only a few days to eat normally.
When I got my bottom braces on recently, completely different story. I was in pain for about four days .. and I still can't eat normally. But, that's mostly due to the cement buildups - so I only have contact on two places (one on each side).. which means I'm stuck with soft foods until I figure it out.
So, it might not be too bad at all, or it might be a bit sore for a few days... but taking ibprofin, wax, and soft foods.. you should be OK!

Pretty much what drgnchsr36 stated.
For me it took 3-4 weeks before the discomfort (soreness/sensitivity) of esp my bottom teeth went away enough for me to eat hard solid food. I could eat soft solid food after a week / week and half. It took 5-6 weeks before all the sores caused by the hooks on the braces went away.
As for talking I did not have any issues w/ not being able to talk normally or understandably.

When I got my braces on I also got a quad helix installed and bite turbos put on the back of my two front teeth. It was very hard for me to talk for about four months. I first got my quad helix taken out after about 3 months and that was awesome. Then about a month later I got my bite turbos taken out.
I'm sure your case won't be as crazy as mine, but I had severe talking problems for about four months.

It took about 4 weeks for my pain, tightness and general discomfort to completely go away and to be able to eat without really thinking about how to do it. But it's different for everyone.

You mean you can eventually eat and talk normally? I'm just not seeing that happen any time soon.

this is a great question, revelvia.
I just got my braces on Tuesday and they are still quite sore when I eat and the inside of my mouth feels very raw, but otherwise I feel no discomfort.
I have plans this weekend to eat out with friends, but I don't know how much I can actually eat; I miss eating without pain!

Agreed! Great question for those newly braced! Out of curiosity, Clangjr & TinySmiley, how is it now? Eating comfortably yet?
Thanks!

HAHA @ Chuck!
Iam918 - the sores will go away?! Even back by the molars? I thought I was just going to have to accept that pain for the next 18-24 months. Thank you for giving me hope!
It probably depends on what you are getting with your braces. Mine hurt really bad for the first four days and I couldn't eat anything other than soup, but since, I've had meat and other chewy foods. That being said, I don't think I'd want to go on a vacation and eat just yet. The process of eating takes longer and my jaw is tired after, so I wouldn't say that I am fully enjoying my meals.
