Eating out tonight - HELP with menu / ceramic / staining
As the title says I'm eating out for the first time with my ceramic braces. Can someone check the menu and tell me what I CAN eat? (without staining) Obviously I know curry is a no-go.
Thanks

Honestly, finding out what is going to stain your ligs is really best done on a trial and error basis. Many people on the board of late say their ligs just don't stain. Three years ago when I got braces it was the opposite--everyone was complaining their ligs stained no matter what. Not quite sure what to make of this except that the staining issue may vary person to person. Maybe how you eat, and maybe how much it bothers you.
Yes curry is out (although once again--I just saw someone say her ligs didn't stain from curry. I had silver ligs stain green from curry!) I personally had issues with red berry sauces and red fruit pies, and tomato based items, mustard and ketchup. Most things on this menu (except curry) would be OK--the fish dishes look pretty safe. Just go, order what you want, and have a good time. Here's what I used to do: get a large glass of water and take a sip every now and then. Swish the water discreetly around your front brackets behind a napkin. And remember, it's just the ligs that stain. If they get really bad you can always call and ask your ortho if they'd swap out the upper fronts for fresh ones.

Thank you. I too was thinking about one of the fish dishes. Maybe the honey glazed salmon. Then I started panicking about stains from the honey glaze! I can see how people get scared to try foods 'just incase' they stain the ligs. It could get really crazy. You're so right, just gotta go with it and if I get badly stained ligs I could always ask the dentist to change them sooner. Thanks for your sound advice.
One more question. I can always feel my brace under my top lip, drives me mad and sometimes it gets sore by the time it gets to evening, especially if I've been talking a lot and it's been rubbing more. Does this always happen? Or will I get used to the feeling and eventually forget about it?
Thanks

just about everything will discolor the ligs; some things obviously faster than others!
i use to go to the ortho about every week and 1/2 and ask them to change!
Then I just started putting a thin layer of wax around my two front brackets and would change the wax throughout the day. The ligs didn't stain as fast with something covering them.

Eventually your mouth toughens up and your brackets won't bother you at all, but until that happens they are very hard on your mouth. Load up your brackets with wax during the day then take it off before dinner. That way your mouth has had a break all day and can handle more talking at night. And the other poster is right. If you put wax on the ligs (providing it stays on thru the meal) the ligs are protected from whatever you are eating.

Really? I don't think my ligs ever stained and I love yellow curry...and I have silver ligs. They tend to fade over time, but I've never seen any staining. My ortho allows us to change them out every Friday, but today was the first time I've gone..since a lig broke off and I thought I should have it since my next appt. isn't for about a month.TumbleDryLow wrote:Honestly, finding out what is going to stain your ligs is really best done on a trial and error basis. Yeah. I ate Palak Paneer at work one day, went into the bathroom to brush my teeth and noticed that my silver ligs were silvery green. It actually surprised me b/c up to that point I hadn't had any issues with that color. And it did fade with time although they never regained their pristine silvery color again. (I had wire ties on my upper clear brackets. Wire ties were the best; no issues at all with staining although I had to practically beg the assistants to do them.)drgnchsr36 wrote:Really? All I found I need to avoid with clear ligs is anything containing turmeric....curry, mustard, picallili. Havent really had a problem with coffee, tomato based things, red wine, all of that brushes out - I get discolouration between visits but nothing that bad - my only bad time was a curry when the yellow just would not go!! I make my own curries though now at home minus the turmeric so I'm fairly happy - going on a curry binge on debracing day though to my fave local curry house!

I have self-ligating braces so no ligs, but let me tell ya - curry items must be horrible on ligs, since they have turned my bright blue spacers green!
It faded with time, but the spacers have remained greenish-blue until removed. I am especially glad that I don't have ligs since this accident happened

Had full mouth metal braces for 21 months. Debonded April 2013. Now wearing clear plastic retainers every other night.
