Splint before bottom braces causing problems? esp clenching

My jaw tires out easily and I recently started getting popping/cracking issues. The ortho told me I had TMJ and made me wear a splint. Well the splint causes me to clench esp when sleeping, and I never did that before the splint. Now, I wake up with headaches because of the clenching. Has this happened to anyone else? I feel like i just wasted a couple hundred dollars on something that is causing me more problems.
