Sudden tooth sensitivity

#1 Post by augustday »

Hi,
My two upper teeth suddenly became sensitive last sunday--they were hurting couple days before. And now no matter what I eat or drink (luke warm water or milk), it hurts. I called my orthodontist and I was told that it's normal. I started using Sensodyne toothpaste but again I was told it has to do more with movement of teeth. However, I don't know how others are coping. What did you do when your teeth were sensitive? This is painful, yikes!

Usually when my teeth are sore to the point of it being painful, I'll take a couple pain relievers and that helps. Otherwise, if it's just minimal soreness, I do a few warm salt water rinses.

Hope your teeth feel better soon!

My front teeth would become sensitive out of the blue, long after the other teeth have stopped hurting. I don't recall doing anything specific other than not biting into things with my front teeth.

Thanks for your replies. I have extreme sensitivity in that one tooth (tooth #2). And now I have some slight swelling on the cheek bone or mastoids (as my friend told me). So I have taken advil so it will reduce some swelling. I hope you're right and it gets better soon.

I've never had sensitivity in my braces experiences due to movement of teeth, but my wife started having mega sensitivity to cold on one tooth on the upper right side of her mouth after about two months in her braces. It's been bugging her when she drinks cold stuff for a week or so now and hasn't subsided yet. Hopefully things with both of y'all will calm down soon!

I'm almost a month in this go-round, and am hoping I don't have any sensitivity issues since these new style wires move stuff more steadily than the older wires/ligs hurt for a few days after an appointment. My teeth feel different this time moving than last time.

Cheers,

d

denSMSgt,
like your wife, I also got braces 2 months ago. But i didn't have any pain or any issue until few days ago. Now, sensitivity is not an issue anymore. Two days ago I was in agony and yesterday it was a bit less and today it's fine. Although cold weather (i'm from Chicago) sometimes aggravates it. I started using Sensodyne toothpaste 3 days ago but I don't believe it was the toothpaste as I think the sensitivity had to do with movement of my tooth.

I'm having this problem right now as well with just one tooth. I can't take a drink of lukewarm water without a horrible pain. I'm just trying to be really conscientious of it, using a straw and avoiding cold things. I usually just try to wait it out :|

I have or had one tooth that was extremely sensitive to anything cold, when you use Sensodyne it takes a week or two to fully kick in, I've been using Sensodyne for about one and a half months or more I assume and I haven't had any issues with sensitivity but I heard it's because your teeth is moving and roots are being exposed.

I am 14 months in my braces and have had this happen about 3 times (2 different teeth). One time I mentioned it to my dentist at a cleaning session and he checked out the tooth and said it was slight enamel wear and pretty common with braces. I too used Sensodyne but it did not help and brushing that tooth would make me wince. The only thing that worked for me was "special" toothpaste from my dentist called Clinipro5000. I should use it every day, but I dont. When I have that sensitivity though, it sorts me out DAY ONE, no delay. It was kind of expensive but again I dont use it every single day...just a couple times a week and have not had the sensitivity return. Enamel wear is pretty common during adulthood braces and this toothpaste is incredible with REALLY high amounts of fluoride. It can actually reverse cavities and makes Sensodyne seem like a joke. Good luck. :)

I'm glad I'm not the only one! 3 months into my braces and I thought the worst was over. I have a few teeth that are VERY sensitive to anything cold right now (it started 2 weeks ago; the pain intensity changes depending on the day). What bothers me is that it hurts quite a bit when I do warm salt water rinses!! I inspected my gum/surrounding areas and they don't look infected so I hope this is "normal"... Thankfully I have my 3rd adjustment coming up in a week, so will definitely ask them when I go in! Meanwhile, I'll just be drinking cold water from a straw :)

Hi- I started feeling sensitivity to cold drinks and sweets on my upper left molar about a month ago- 2 months into treatment. i thought it was a cavity so i brought it up in my last adjustment and my ortho said it was actually my gums (between teeth). sensodyne wasnt helping so he said to massage my gums with honey after brushing.

I got my braces like 4 days ago and my teeth hurt really bad and I know that happens and to relieve this pain I would take some Advil and drink and icee and I would be fine but in the past day or so I would feel really bad sensitivity in one of the teeth on the left side and this would happen with hot or cold drinks and since I can't drink an icee without wanting to pull my tooth out because of the sensitivity in that one tooth all I have is Advil and that barely helps. In the mean time I'll eat Popsicles and avoid that one tooth. Wish me luck!

Old thread, but I am so glad this is here because I've been having sensitivity issues with my teeth ever since they moved up to a thicker wire. My teeth are NOT happy!

I've been using sensitive toothpaste and it works so long as I remember to brush at least three times away (which I don't), so that's fun.

Old thread but VERY thankful for this! I had to have a root canal done on a filling due to my teeth moving so experiencing extreme sensitivity to cold and sweets in several teeth freaked me out a good bit. Thank you all!

Had the same problem right after I got my braces. Ibuprofen and Sensodyne got me through it and after a short time the sensitivity went away. Still have some pain when they make an adjustment but no more sensitivity.
