Had my first adjustment today and I am sort of upset.

#1 Post by jamsmak04 »

I had my first adjustment today if you wanna call it that. I have been in braces for 12 weeks. All they did was take out the wires, ask me to floss and put the same size wires in for 10 more weeks. They say this is because of my uneven back teeth. Now they would not be crooked anymore except when getting my braces, the brackets fell off. They said they were no big deal and they would put them on at my adjustment. My orth told the asst. to put in the bigger wire until she said the back teeth needed some time in the same wire. I am so mad, why did they not just try to put the brackets on at the intial appt. 22 weeks in the same wire seems like forever. Next appt is feb 6th.

While it is discouraging, I wouldn't be too upset. These things happen. You still have a long way to go; they didn't change out the wires for a reason. Your teeth weren't ready and if they would have put in stronger wires, you could have damage that would set you back who knows how long.

At one point, I was in the same wire for 6 months! And my back teeth didn't get bracketed until month 9, if I remember correctly. You will also have months where it seems like nothing is happening but something is always happening.

Good luck!

Hey Im in the same top wire for three months. Don't feel bad, tho maybe getting it changed. But the wires are memory wires which means they go back to their original perfect shape. They're not there yet because of your back molars. Give it some time.

Thanks I appreciate the reassurance. Now I am actually happy to be in the same wire. To be honest my 4 back teeth on my left side where they just put the brackets on are killing me. So I could not imagine a thicker wire. So they did it for a reason and I trust their judgement. My teeth have moved a lot so I know things are happening.

yeah my top wire I thought they should be chaning it already because their main focus is my top jaw and the overbite, but they left it and I know they are doing it to perfect everything gradually and all the intricate stuff. I mean they changed my bottom wire before the top and I know its all done for a reason and we as the patients must trust our orthodontists. They might change my top wire on Thursday.

Don't be discouraged, this might come as a shock but I've only had my wires changed once. That was 2 years ago if I remember correctly! I'm ok with it though, cuz my teeth weren't very crooked it was mostly my bite.

Btw Jamsmak04, I went to my second adjustment just 12 weeks in and my top wire is STILL the same, so I wouldnt worry about it. I been 12 weeks in the same wire I got when they put the braces on. She said she is going to be doing wire changes in January, 6 more weeks from now.

My top wire has not been changed a single time yet and I am at the 5 1/2 months mark. Don't get upset, teeth only move that fast and by forcing the crooked teeth into a thick wire one may be damaging the roots. Time will fly by!
Had full mouth metal braces for 21 months. Debonded April 2013. Now wearing clear plastic retainers every other night.

Archwired28 I totally agree with you. I think the reason why my wires get changed sooooo often is because my teeth are barely crooked. The reason why my top one isnt changed yet is because they're working at the overbite gradually and with elastics. :) Don't worry our orthos know what they're doing.
