Pain during the night but less during the day?

#1 Post by bushbaby »

I just had my penultimate adjustment and have on the thickest arch wire imaginable - its for levelling my arch apparently. Weirdly, it hurts like crazy all night, so I'm waking up around once every 45 minutes and having a hard time getting back to sleep. It then hurts for the first few hours I'm up, then eases off a bit, but gets worse again after eating. Has anyone else experienced this? Why is the pain so uneven throughout the day? I really don't get it and I'm getting fed up of not sleeping :(

Have you tried Advil?
I don't usually take pain meds but when it hurts (mostly at night when I just get adjustments)
I just pop one and I am off to sleep land.

It is possible that you grind/clench/brux at night thus causing yourself pain. Since your pain gets worse after eating, I am assuming you do grind at night :( Have you been evaluated for that? If not, you can certainly get some help from your ortho.
Had full mouth metal braces for 21 months. Debonded April 2013. Now wearing clear plastic retainers every other night.

I have no formal dental or orthodontic education. Hence, all opinions expressed by me on this forum are those of an "informed consumer" and by no means intended as an expert advice.

I'm certainly aware that I clench but neither the ortho or the dentist have ever suggested that I look like I grind! I do take painkillers before I go to bed (Bayer PM) which help me get to sleep but don't help me STAY asleep!

How long are you supposed to go between doses of Bayer PM? Certainly not every 45 minutes, so it sounds like it may not be working for you. Maybe try something different?

Trying to apply a little logic (which can be dangerous :D) - you know how you're supposed to elevate a joint if you've hurt it? Maybe while you're awake, your head being elevated above your heart helps with the pain, but when you lie down, it's not elevated any more? And then worse after eating just because of the 'work' they're doing?

Thanks for the advice, maybe there's something in that logic thing after all

The good news is, a week later and I'm back to normal (or as normal as I ever am in traintracks) so it was obviously just a passing thing linked to the last adjustment.

Oh and the other good news is, this is hopefully my penultimate archwire - I may only be 12 weeks away from teeth freedom!!!
