Post braces, do removable retainers ever get changed?

My braces were taken off last November. I just had my appointment today, after almost 5 months. I thought they would change my removable retainer (I was told to bring it along when my appointment was booked in November and did so today), but they didn't change it. I use a toothbbrush to brush it every morning and all and sometimes soak it in mixed mouthwash. It does have permanent saliva marks on it from wearing it nightly. It still fits and not broken or anything, but I just thought they would change it, after so many months of wearing it :? . The Ortho simply placed it in my mouth, took it out and said they would see me again in 8 months! That was it. My next appointment is in December. I can't imagine wearing this same retainer till then or am I supposed to wear it forever? I also noticed a line on my right cheek, where the retainer fits on that side and I think it might be causing the line. I didn't notice it when the braces were on and when they were taken off. I just noticed it a few weeks ago. Or perhaps it was the braces that caused it, idk. I'm happy with my teeth, but I'm actually not happy with the facial changes the braces did cause. I look a little different now than before. I was fine with the way I looked before, but now not so much. But i'm going to have to get used to that. Right now i'm concerned about the retainers. Do they get changed after braces are taken off, or not? Also, will my teeth move if I don't wear it, even though I've permanent retainers in my teeth? I've been wearing it every night so far, but I don't like this line I'm seeing on my cheek. :? For anyone whose braces are off, what happens at your appointments? Does you removable retainer ever get changed, at what point?

Your retainer should last for years, so no, it doesn't need to be replaced after five months. Your teeth will move if you stop wearing your retainer, so yes, you should keep wearing one forever (most nights of the week). I'm in braces AGAIN at age 44 due to my teeth moving after years without a retainer, so that's how I know!

Ask your ortho, but I would guess that checking in with an ortho every 3 years or so, to make sure your retention is going well and your retainer is in good condition, would be a reasonable regimen.

As for the line, maybe a different style of retainer would suit you. E.g. Hawley v. Essix.
