Steak and Braces
I have nearly all the steaks from a half of beef in my freezer and I'm trying to figure out how to prepare them. I tried grilling one and then cutting it very small but my teeth just ached by the end of dinner. This is fairly nice quality beef so it isn't especially tough and the cut I used was sirloin tip so that should have been one of the nicer cuts but I just can't face doing it again.
I'm able to eat beef that has been braised (say in a slow cooker) because it is then very soft and if I cut it small it doesn't require much chewing but it seems weird to cook a bunch of steak in the slow cooker. I was wondering if marinating it might help? Ideas welcome

Re: Steak and Braces
How long have you had your braces? I am craving steak and haven't gotten any due to being worried about the pain it would cause.
Re: Steak and Braces
I've had mine (plus an expander) in since February.
Re: Steak and Braces
I love steak, but I'm not even going to try to attempt eating it until I'm debraced. Until then, I'm sticking to ground beef or shredded beef.
Re: Steak and Braces
When I first got braces the ortho was having a contest...the prize?...2 steak dinners at a great restaurant. Huh?
Well, now I can understand....I eat steak all the time--broiled,barbecued etc.--even with my Forsus appliance in place. For me, it was a gradual getting used to being "naughty" (steak is not naughty food, by the way)...
Anyway, as soon as your mouth feels somewhat less tender, maybe you can graduate from softer meats slowly to the steak--and know that when you are really using your teeth and mouth is when the teeth are the most motivated to get a move on...I heard an ortho say "do not be afraid to make your teeth work."
Soon, you will know that you are ready to be join the multitude of truly naughty tinsel teethed on this forum --crunchy ch*etos (product name may be blocked), nuts (smaller, softer kind),pizza, caramel (I have had a limited amount of caramel--my ortho charges $50 whenever you wreck an appliance), suckers etc...(still haven't gotten to popcorn--I hear the hulls can get into your gum, like under a molar band, and get infected. I also heard that the ortho can tell when you've had popcorn ( ) )
Anyway, when I first got braces, the receptionist at the ortho office said she had just gotten out of braces, and ate EVERYTHING when she was in them (probably didn't have to worry about the $50 charge since she works for the ortho!).
Good luck--it gets better!!!

Re: Steak and Braces
I've had my braces 22 months and have had 1 steak at a pricey restaurant - it was a filet mignon and it melted in my mouth. That was the 1st and only steak I've had the entire braced time. I'm supposed to get debraced before August and am looking forward to a steak for my birthday the 29th of August. It's to hard to chew steak. Good luck!

I've had my braces for 2 months now and have no problems at all eating steak from the grill. I think I was able to eat steak after 3-4 weeks, I just had to cut it up small enough to chew. I basically eat anything I want except nuts and caramel. I've eaten tortilla chips and popcorn without any problems too. I just make sure I floss as soon as I can. I had my first adjustment today and they couldn't tell that I had popcorn. In fact the orthodontic assistant told me I do a great job at keeping my braces clean and everything was looking good ... now watch, I just jinxed myself and I'll break a bracket off tonight haha
