Approx 36 Hours to go......

#1 Post by Angel269 »

Hi.

In approx 36 hours I get my ceramic upper braces. I am starting to panic again (I have already been panicing on here).

After a dental phobia for most of my life the word "braces" horrified me and was probably one of the main triggers of my phobia.

Am getting very nervous now but know it is now or never-I am a 24 year old married, mum of 1 (11 months).

I intend to start a braces story but I just feel so embarrased about people seeing what my teeth look like

You'll be pleasantly surprised that the actual braces being fitted doesn't hurt at all.
The glue they use on the teeth tastes a bit funny but it really is pain free.

The next morning you will start getting some pain, take some painkillers to ease yourself into the first few days and then it's get better.

Good luck!

I'm 36 hours in... and so far, so good! getting them was far less uncomfortable than i had expected, and while they feel a bit awkward, i'm already getting used to them.

I am so excited for you. I was super excited getting mine. Even though I think I look beyond hideous, I am glad I did it. Almost a month ago, time flies.

Today I went to the hospital with my mother in law reference a problem with her ankle. I took my son with me and he became quite grouchy so we sat in play area and there was another mum and a little girl there. I felt quite relieved knowing I have my appointment tomorrow after seeing that this other mum had upper ceramics and metal lowers. I said I hope you don't mind me saying your braces are really discrete and I'm quite relieved to see as I get mine tomorrow-she seemed happy to talk about her braces for a couple of minutes. It cheered me up, as I haven't seen anyone else around who is older/a mum with braces around the area I live :-)

I'm glad to hear your fears were alleviated a bit by talking with that woman. I LOVE talking about my braces! (Much to the dismay of my family and friends, who couldn't give a darn.) I've had many a cashier at the supermarket ask me about them, and tell me about their kids who need braces... who still suck their thumbs... etc.

I'm telling you - the ceramics ARE very discreet, especially if you wear clear or tooth-colored ligatures (if you need ligs). When I switched out my metals to ceramic, people thought I'd removed my braces completely. Then they thought I was wearing retainers. I love them!

I wouldn't say I have a dental "phobia" right now, but I surely hate going in for cleanings because I know how uncomfortable they're going to be. I lay there all tensed up for 45 minutes, and leave with a headache afterward. I always schedule cleanings for the afternoon so I can take off from work and go straight home. I would MUCH rather visit the orthodontist. I schedule ortho appointments first thing in the morning, and then go to work afterward.

You'll be fine! The nasty stuff kennyandrews85 mentioned is the etching solution they put on your teeth prior to putting on the glue. Yeah... it's a sour citrus-y taste. But they do rinse it out fairly quickly. I accidentally swallowed some. Not pleasant.

Good luck! And don't worry about posting pics of your teeth - we've ALL been there. Funny how I don't like to take pics, but had no problems posting my crooked, yellow, braced teeth.

It's gonna be fine. The pre-installation anxiety for me was the worst part (so far) of the braces experience (aside from the 5 days I had bite turbos, but that conversation is for another day). You might want to grab some Sensodyne and go ahead and start brushing with that, and start taking Ibuprofen tonight and don't stop until next week if you have to. Breathe through your nose when they are installing them. That citrus-flavored stuff Kenny mentioned is kind of gross and made me gag a little when I forgot to breathe out of my nose. Other than that, the installation was way better than a normal dental appointment. Also, once they are installed, chew on a straw to get some blood circulation, and try to eat foods even if it hurts a little...your teeth are secure, they aren't going anywhere. That really helped when I got my lowers installed. You'll be fine. You'll have second thoughts about doing this next week, but that's normal, and will pass. This is all temporary and is just a short period of your life. Just remind yourself of that.

I bought a Boots own brand Ortho toothpaste, which I will start using. Just charging my electric toothbrush which I also have interdental heads for and have plenty of wax and ibuprofen in the house too (as well as a box of Superfloss!)

You might rethink the electric toothbrush. Mine did not feel so great on my teeth when I was first braced. Still doesn't, actually.

I've done it-Im officially braced  I was so surprised by how good and discrete they look!

They felt so weird and big when they were put on! Last couple of hours starting chaffing my mouth-swished with salt water and put some of little ones teething gel on the sore areas! Felt some tension since they were on and am definitely feeling tension but fortunately not pain!

Will try and start my braces story later!
