Hi everyone!
I have been lurking and read similar stories to mine, but here it goes...
I am a 34 year old mother of 3. I have been married to my 2nd and forever husband for a little over three years. We have a 18 month old son as well as my 2 kids from my first starter marriage. They are 14 and 11. I am TERRRRRIFIED of the dentist. For even simple cleanings, I require at very minimum a numbing agent. My daughter was blessed with straight teeth, but my older son (the 11 year old) was not. So he went in for a check up and the dentist said it was time. OK! Time for him to get braces... not so easy though. He decided that since he inherited my teeth, I should go through braces with him.... :::::SCREEEEECH!! What???::::::
Fast forward to today, I got 7 spacers put in with my install appointment scheduled for 9/5 @1pm. One band already broke :/.
My son's appointment will be sometime late september, his dad is not on board with him getting the braces & I am working to get a court order saying that I have full medical custody.
Anyway, I am getting the self-ligating style. I have NO idea the brand or what, all I know is that they require less adjustment.
I look forward to documenting my journey and making some new friends along the way!!

Hi Congrats on starting your journey.
It is so brave of you to go through with this. I am a Mum too and have a 13 month old son. He unfortuanetly has my teeth (a large diastema) and when I saw them I felt dread that I realised I would have to do something about my teeth otherwise I would feel hypocritical about him doing anything in the future if I hadn't (feel free to read my story on my signature/link).
I too suffered a severe phobia, one where I didn't go to the dentist for 7 years
I got over this 3 years ago and started my ortho journey several months ago, but had my braces fitted (upper ceramics) late June. I am please that I have seen my diastema starting to close already and that is what has ket me going, along with the fact they are so discreet (with a coated archwire) that nobody notices!
Look forward to seeing pictures and hearing as your journey progresses-Good luck, it will be worth it in the end!

Thats very sweet of you. I wish someone had gone through braces with me. Ive already said if I do have kids (which I guess I will in the future) and they inherit my teeth, I'll definitely have them in braces. I too, was afraid of the dentist. It all started with a friend teasing me about my upcoming root canal (which by the way is NOTHING). After I got over that initial fear, I love sitting in the dentist chair :)

Congrats on getting started. I was supposed to get mine on Tuesday, but my ortho wanted to postpone putting on the top because I had to get a temporary crown last week and won't get the permanent until the 21st. I didn't want to go through the pain twice, so I opted to wait to put on both on the 28th. I also honestly started getting really anxious as the big day neared. Not so much over the pain but over being stuck with off-white/yellowish teeth for 18-20 months. Long story short, I'm still undecided on the whitening, and I'm running out of time, again.
Anyways, no kiddos for me, yet, but I'll definitely get them braces as children if they need them and want them.

I totally forgot that I started this. My braces got delayed due to Peri issues, then I lagged and dragged my feet.
My son didn't end up doing it with me because his father thinks he should wait (long story).
Good news is that my braces were installed this past Wednesday. My journey finally begins!!!

Well that certainly took a while -- welcome to the club
Having braces ain't so bad - you'll get over it in a week
You'll soon find it's just a small inconvenience (...albeit disgusting after a meal). And hey, if you're fashion-forward, you can pick funky lig colors and rock the teeth jewelry
Make the most of it, and don't worry what others think. Own it!

Please have your ex call me LOL. I am a testament to what happens when your parents either resist or can't afford braces when it's better to have them. Here I am with braces for the first time at the age of 48. Whenever I see my mom, she cries and says how sorry she is that they didn't find the will or the money so that I could have had braces when I was young. She feels so bad that I am waiting for my wedding until my braces are done cooking.

Thanks everyone. I went in yesterday to have a band put on my back upper molar and find out I popped a bracket on one of my upper side teeth. (I'm sure I'll learn all the tooth names eventually) so now I have green bands on the bottom and pink on top. It totally goes with my blue hair... :)
Flossing sucks @@@
