URGENT: people who had bimax protrusion & EXTRACTIONS
hey, please take your time to read and respond to help someone who is in dire need
i'm currently going through a bad phase in orthodontics and have had bad side effects from extraction/retraction. I had 4 premolar removed for bimax protrusion (flaring of teeth)
Everything was going okay until powerchains. Literally after powerchains were tightened for about the second or third time around (first few times nothing bad happened), the next morning my face looked more sunken in (flat cheeks), my eyebags & dark circles which used to be very minimal were now extended and noticeable and its had a very bad impact on my face.
Now i have a loss of soft tissue/fat from my cheek, undereyelids, temples, etc. and now my eyelids feel very droopy causing me to strain. now i look so skinny and tired and face feels so flat and saggy.
Not only that but I've been having terrible breathing problems. I can only barely breathe through one nostril and I feel like my mouth airway is restricted. Neck pains and spinal pains started getting worse. and now I think i'm starting to have TMJ symptoms (jaw aches and clicking)
i'm so confused don't know if i should stick with treatment or seek another ortho.
I'm still early in my retraction, only the canines have been retracted and are 85% closing the premolar gaps. Can't wait to see what happens when all teeth are retracted.....
1. I heard that these extraction side effects don't usually happened to bimax protrusion cases but why me damnit? Did she retract my canines too much? (only canines have been powerchained so far)
2. All my problems came once she started power chain retraction, should I ask her to push my canine outward, reversing the retraction, and instead move my back teeth? Will this restore my fullness and health again and reverse these side effects?
3. have any of you guys with bimax pro. been through this? did everything return back to normal once finished? I don't want to go through this if i'm just gonna look worse and health deteriorates.
4. Worst case scenario, if I end up having to reverse everything and add implant will i look like i did before braces?
has anyone had anything like this happen to them?
please respond

Hi pacmane
It has only been 3 days since i got my braces on!!! Let me tell u 1 thing i learnt: What suits others may not suit u. Whoever i asked they said get extractions done.At first i was really convinced to get extractons done, but after consultation with 2 different orthos, i found that extractions was not the right thing 4 me. infact after having done some research on extractions, i would NEVER recommed extractions to anyone, but again it depends from individual to individual. In short : Get another opinion from a different orthodontist. Anyways if u have had the extractions done, then, based on my knowledge, i think its too late to get things reversed.
If u think that powerchains is causing all the problems , then get ur ortho to look into the matter. As mentioned above u might want to consult another ortho. You might want to pay your doctor a visit too regarding your health issues.
Thats all i can say.
What i can do now is to sincerely pray 4 you to be healthy again and to be what like what u want to be. Amen
Pray for me too. And 4 everyone else.
Good luck
Keep us informed.

thanks for your response curious
initially i consulted with two orthos and both said extractions. A bimax protrusion case is almost always corrected with extractions is and is usually the only exception when it comes to extractions. Usually the side effects don't occur within bimax cases that's what is puzzling me and what could be wrong.
Yes, you can actually reverse everything (expander+implant) but it's alot of money and time and hard to find a ortho that can do this here.
i just wanna get rid of these side effects.
i'll ask her to move my canines forward and see how it goes.
thanks for your prayers ill be praying for you too

Re: URGENT: people who had bimax protrusion & EXTRACTIONS
i have had extractions done and i'm also in the phase of retracting my canines. i think the change has been positive cus it makes my mouth/face less full.
the only thing i worry about is that i dont get enough space from just premolar extraction cus my molars move forwards despite having TPA...
how big is the space (mm) between ur canines and incisors? does your mouth still protrude out now that you say you have a sunken in profile?
don't panic. u r not alone.

I had extractions done 20 years ago and it was the worse decision i have ever made. I am in the process of getting my mouth re-open and getting implants put in. This practic needs to be changed. I think I might be able to help you. Call me 613 862 0064 this site does not allow me to post my email add.

bimaxilliary aprotrusion and 4 first premolar extraction case. Best decision ever..my face looks way better and more balanced (less full in the mouth area)!!
Re: URGENT: people who had bimax protrusion & EXTRACTIONS
I would not trust anyone on this site telling you that it's a great decision. Archwired promotes extractions and the use of powerchains. One of my students went to an ortho that said there was no other way to do the ortho. He had to remove 4 teeth. They very persistent with him. I told him not to do it. He finally changed ortho's and the new one said he was absolutely right he did not need to remove 4 teeth. Keeping the 4 teeth is a lot more work for the Ortho's and more time consuming. You need to find one that does not promote this practice.

This is completely false. Not extracting teeth in treatment is almost always easier than doing it with extraction. You will find that many general dentists will address orthodontic conditions that do not require extraction, but will refer to specialists when they are needed.plc wrote:I would not trust anyone on this site telling you that it's a great decision. I do not disagree that multiple opinions are a good idea, but to unequivocally say that extractions are bad is a disservice to this board. While there are times when extractions are not required, there are also cases where they are necessary for overall appearance and to avoid stressing the health of the gums and bone. We are talking about long term here. Many periodontal problems take years to develop.

Re: URGENT: people who had bimax protrusion & EXTRACTIONS
I was told by my orthodontist that by extracting 4 teeth it would take only 2 years instead of 4 years with an expander. Thats why I am saying it is easier. Also, probably more profitable for him . If you do a search on the internet you will find tons of people with neck and back problems related to extractions. I have severe health issues since i have had this procedure done. Stiff muscles everywhere, neck, back, legs, acid reflux, digestive issues etc... You throw your body completely out of alignment . All these issues started after this procedure was done. My face has never looked the same.
colleges have to stop teaching this method. They should be held responsible for ruinning peoples health. It takes you years to make the connection that it was the extractions that created all your health issues. Who are these people to think they are not creating helath issues when moving the placement of the bones in your head. You have teeth for a reason and you should keep them. Get a good Orthodontist that understands this

Re: URGENT: people who had bimax protrusion & EXTRACTIONS
Stop talking rubbish.
If this was the case then everyone who had teeth falling out from bad dental hygeine would be having the same back/shoulder/neck issues due to throwing their "whole bodies out of alignment".
By this logic, people with wisdom teeth are healthier than those without because we are meant to have all these extra teeth.
Show us some scientific evidence to your claims or stop trying to scare people who have already made the decision.

Hey Kenny if that works for you all the best to you...
I think it's important to take into account other people's point of view once in while. It might save you lots of grief in the long run. You can learn from other people's experiences. I think most people wont ever make the connection and you probably won't. My Chiropractor, massage therapist were the ones that asked me if I had this procedure had been done. You'll find tones of specialists that agree that this procedure is not good for your health. I'm not trying to scare you... I'm trying to educate people to make the right decision. There are many schools of thought on the subject. I know for me reversing this procedure will be the best decision for me. Since I have been doing the exercises that my chiro and massage therapist have given me which mimicks the position my jaw used to be in I have been doing much better.
GOOD LUCK

Here is one Ortho's opinion
Will Extracting Teeth Before Orthodontics Change the Face?
YES, extracting teeth before orthodontics at ANY age can and will dramatically change the shape of your face as well as the shape and size of your upper lip. A study was done on identical twins where one sister was treated with extractions before orthodontics and the other twin sister was treated without extractions. After completion of the orthodontics they no longer even looked like twins because their faces were radically different. Guess which sister had the more attractive face.....

Hi, i know it’s been a long time but can you please update me on what route of treatment you eventually chose and what the results are? I’m currently experiencing the same thing, I had slight bimax portrusion and eventually got 4 teeth extracted and now I look worse than when I had bimax portrusion. My gaps aren’t fully closed yet and I still have a few mms on each side but I don’t want to finish the treatment and am now looking for ways to reverse it.
Your reply would be very much appreciated. Thank you so much in advance :( x
