Low maintenance foods

#1 Post by RMB1013 »

Ok, so what types of food should I avoid with braces?
I know not chewy or sticky or hard.

But aren't some foods easier to clean out than others.

For instance if you eat chocolate cake, it will be messy.
But not if you have chocolate pudding.

Lettuce I find also gets stuck. So, i avoid that.

I had a piece of spinach bread. That was a big mistake. What a messy mouth.

Hi RMB1013!!
Hope u r in the pink of health.i just got my upper braces on and so this "Low maintenance food" is also an issue for me too.
My ortho advised me that for a week or so i should AVOID:
1)Burgers :(
2)Pizzas :(
3)Hard to chew bread and such stuff :(
4)Apples and other hard food stuff. :(
5)Any other hard food that i might have to "bite into" with my incisors.
6)Sticky food (like u mentioned)

Cleaning my mouth is not much of an issue for me. What really bothers me is the proper movement of my maxilla and mandible while chewing food and apparently so, braces is a hindrance in this "proper movement" bcoz i cant bite properly. If my jaws do not move properly while chewing, it hampers mandibular growth. So u cant always rely on a very "soft diet" even if u have braces. YOU HAVE TO HAVE HARD FOOD. BUT since we are in braces, we will have to stick to what our ortho SAYS. In other words: You have to have a "soft diet" 4 sometime
Good Luck
Keep us posted :)

I find wholegrain/really wheat based cereals a nightmare to eat and have to use a water jet to clean up before I brush!

I have eaten french bread and a certain caramel and nougat bar very popular in the UK! I think I was able to eat it due to only being braced on my uppers up to premolars.

Mash potato has been my godsend :D I was very lucky that I loved it pre-braces and it was always my comfort food, but since being braced mashed potato and me have become even closer!

I haven't had braces applied yet, or even made a consultation, but I'm already thinking of foods I'd be able to eat... And corned beef hash will definitely be added to my list :)

I've had braces for a while now and I can eat just about anything I want most of the time. I can eat taffys and caramels, but I choose to avoid them because they a pain to get out of my braces. I avoid hard food for 2-3 days after adjustments. But any other time, I can eat anything.

My ortho gave me a long list of foods on a traffic light system, green for good, amber for careful and red for never. The red list included hard foods (pizza crust, baguettes, nuts, raw carrot); sweets (especially chewy candy, cereal bars, hard chocolate bars) and sodas.

Things like rice, porridge, couscous and bread (I cut off the crusts) are ok; if it does lodge behind the hooks, waiting a couple of minutes and a drink of water usually clear it. If it's on the molars it's more annoying than visual unless you have a Cheshire smile. Had bean sprouts in a Chinese roll and one looped around a wire which took some tongue gymnastics to recover mid meal, so even the most benign thing can turn into a culinary nightmare.

Suck quietly and carry a big napkin.
