Extraction tomorrow

#1 Post by SmilinginCO »

My journey begins tomorrow. I'm having one lower tooth extracted. Does anyone have any tips or advice on extractions?

Stock up on painkillers and yoghurts.

The actual pulling of the tooth doesn't hurt at all, your mouth will be numb, it's the night after trying to sleep through it, just make sure you have painkillers and it will be a breeze.

I had 4 teeth out and only 1 of them actually caused me any pain.
Brace Date: 14th April 2011
Estimated Debrace Date: 14th April 2013
Real Debrace Date 18th June 2013

4 extractions, upper ceramic brackets and lower metal to fix overjet and overcrowding.

Take some painkillers before the numbness wears off. It is much easier to stop pain from starting rather than stop it ones it starts. Have some icepacks ready and put them on your cheek for about 20 minutes at a time. You can feel quite tired after an extraction so give your body some time to recover - have some good magazines or movies at hand.
Yoghurt and other soft food is also a good idea. Don't drink from a straw or spit out anything forcefully. You can dislodge the clot if you do this and end up with "dry socket". About 36 to 48 hours after the extraction, you can start rinsing your mouth with warm salt water. Don't spit it out but rather let it "dribble" out. Do this after every meal.

I had an impacted wisdom tooth surgically removed in August. I had to give a university lecture 2 days later. I kept the swelling under control with ice, took my painkillers and antibiotics as told and nobody knew I'd had any dental work done. People didn't believe I 'd had a wisdom tooth removed 2 days earlier until I showed them the socket. I got another one removed 3 weeks later. Recovery was very smooth and uneventful in both cases. Hope it is the same for you.

Thanks for the tips! I headed over to the dentist! I told my boss that I would probably not be coming back.

LOL, make sure you call him so he doesn't try replacing you :) The pain isn't really that bad, it just feels weird. The real pain kicks in with powerchains and elastics, which is next week for me :)

Thanks everyone! The extraction went well. It hurt more then I thought it would and I ended up going back to the dentist to make sure everything was ok and it was. I realized that chasing Around an 18 month old and constantly leaning over and picking him up doesn't help the extraction recovery. LOL.

On Thursday I had my braces put on!! Woo hoo! I'm so excited! It went really well and I can't believe how clear my top ceramics are!! They are also wicked sharp!! Wax is my new best friend. I really don't have as much pain as I thought I would. Eating is definately not easy but I think it will be a good weight loss plan! The teeth around the extraction were aching and now with the braces they feel loads better. Anyway, I'm just thrilled!
