Need DENTAL WAX: HELP!

#1 Post by Realizingadream »

Hi. It is Thanksgiving weekend, and I am running dangerously low on dental wax. Is it possible somehow for me to turn parrafin wax used for canning, into a bit softer wax, to use?

I looked for the "Coke bottle candy" to use that, but couldn't find any.

I gots the owies.

HELP.

You can usually find dental wax in your local drug store or even in the drug departments of places like Target or Walmart.

I am from the US northwest also. I use Mack's earplug wax. It's got silicone, and is very soft. I love it. You can find it at Kroger's Fred Meyer or almost anywhere. Not very expensive either...

Thank you for answers.

I melted some paraffin (canning) wax and put a tiny bit of cooking oil in it to make it softer, and was able to use that. :P I did it very carefully with a double-boiler and all.

It seems in my town there is NO dental wax. It is a decent size town and all, but I went to all of the drug stores and grocery stores various times, and have never found any. To drive to my ortho is a really long drive, AND he's closed for the holiday.

That is why I was trying to come up with alternatives. I don't usually need wax, but there is a poky wire I will have the ortho fix in a few days. :-= There are also a few other bracket issues, and I usually NEVER have problems.

In the meantime, I'll drive over to Fred Meyer and get (ew) the ear stuff. I have gone through my real dental wax from my ortho, and a bunch of this homemade stuff too. And my mouth is still sore, because I let it get away from me.

Thank you. I never knew I could get this desperate. I have a cold and that isn't helping me much--but the good news is, I hardly ever get a cold, so I can do this. :x

Sheesh.

The Mack's ear pillow silicone wax is my favorite as well. It is cheaper and molds much better than the other ortho wax. One package lasts me a very long time also. You will find it in the section with the ear plugs in the pharmacy section.

I'm 48 years old and just got braces a week ago. My OD Asst told me not to wax all of my teeth but these things are tearing my mouth apart. I spoke to others that said they always waxed without issue. Then my OD called to check on me and said it was OK and would even supply wax for me. Not sure how much he will provide so I'm looking for alternatives. I found this website and saw this post suggesting "Mack's ear pillow silicone wax". However, after a quick web search, I see no such item existing. Is this the correct name? The description sounds great. I will check the pharms to see if I can find it but I am concerned why I can't see it online. If someone else can find a website with a photo, PLEASE post the link. Thanks.

I haven't really paid attention to the packaging on my Mack's lately. Looking it up, it is called Mack's earplugs made of pillow soft silicone. It is in a blue package with yellow and white lettering.

Hope that helps. I've found mine at my local Target and Walgreens stores in the ear plug sections.

So they are earplugs? Actual earplugs? Stuck inside your mouth like cotton balls or something? Or are they "moldable" like wax?

It's just odd to me b/c I know earplugs well (I'm a drummer) but I guess I never heard of Mack's before.

They are silicone wax earplugs used for swimming.

They are earplug size pieces of silicone wax. I just tear off smaller pieces to use for my orthodontic stuff. They sell the silicone wax for orthodontics also, but it is more expensive overall and not as easy to find unless you order online.

They are completely moldable to whatever shape you need and aren't shaped like traditional earplugs. The moldability of the wax is part of what makes it work so well for either purpose.

Found it today (Official name: Mack's Pillow Soft Silicone Earplugs) at WalMart for just under $4. Package came with 6 pair (12) so that's about 33 cents a piece. I may be putting it on a little bit thick but it takes one plug to cover all of my teeth. I am putting it on in 4 strips - Top L/R and then Bottom L/R.

This stuff is awesome compared to the wax. The wax comes off when I eat and I end up swallowing it inadvertently. Mack's may move off of the braces and slide up the gums but I can push it right back into place when finished. It's also easier to remove at the end of the day when it's time to detail (brush and water pik)

Thanks for all of the advise and assistance.

Another fan of Mack's silicone earplugs here! I think the stuff is amazing -- cheap, won't melt off when I drink coffee, adheres and stays in place much better than I could ever get wax to do. I noticed that CVS even has a generic store-brand version of it, too, but I don't use enough to consider the cost of Mack's a hardship.

Dear Klo and others:

Back when I had complained on here and asked my question; I had made a speed run to the orthodontist and 1) got my very ouchy wire fixed and 2) got an entire boatload of wax from the front office lady. I mean, she brought it out in a BASKET of little packets for me.

So between the wire on that side not hurting as much (and the other wires completely simmered down to non-ouchiness), and a goodly supply of dental wax from the orthodontist, I forgot to go get the Mack's stuff.

I have now started to run low on my supply of real dental wax, so I went and got the Mack's, yesterday. There it was in Safeway. Easy Peasy. I think it was $6 and there are 12 good-size blobs in there. That is 50 cents a blob, and well worth the price when you are dealing with mouth hurt, you know? I used half of one blob to fix the ouch last night, and I could have used less.

It comes in an awesome holder so the product stays clean and handy. Unfortunately it isn't an individual holder--I would have to take the whole package with me--but I'll experiment with re-using the small envelopes the orthodontist uses for wax--to carry some in my purse or something.

This is smooth and moldable and so far has been no problem with sliding around. It feels SO NICE in there.

THANK YOU PEOPLE.
