My orthodontist had asked me to stop wearing elastic bands

#1 Post by pinkiipromise »

Hi everyone

So I had Damon braces for little over 2 years now and had been wearing elastic bands since 2 years ago. I have been quite good with wearing my elastics constantly and two days ago, my orthodontist had asked me to stop wearing elastics for a while. I find this absurd as I have heard many cases where patients do not wear their elastics and end up having their treatment prolonged.

Has anyone had this happened to them before?

Each case is different but I have worn elastics off and on throughout treatment.

I think it is normal for an ortho to tell a patient to stop for a while. Sometimes things just need to settle. I think the issue with people having to prolong their treatment is due to them not wearing elastics as instructed.

If you are a class II and wear class II elastics too long you might get a class III tendency. This can happen if pts becomes too eager with their elastics and wear them more than what the ortho recommends, they often do it because they believe they will get their braces off sooner if they wear them more that what their ortho tells them.
This is just to give an example

Trust your ortho and do what he recommends

I would LOVE it if my ortho told me I didn't have to wear elastics for awhile! I asked him if there would ever be a time during braces that I wouldn't have to wear them. He told me I might not have to wear them AFTER I get my braces off! (I hope he was kidding-I couldn't tell--a retainer with elastic hooks?)

Your ortho may want to allow your teeth to settle. That happened to me when my ortho was correcting the midline of my lower teeth. She asked me to stop wearing my elastics for a month because she was afraid I might over-correct the midline but within the month that I stopped wearing my elastics, my midline moved back to its original position so at my next visit I had to start wearing my elastics again and continued to do so until the day I got my braces off. Trust your ortho and monitor the movement of your teeth :) All the best!
